What is your Pet Peeve

Not that I disagree with you, but how far do airplane seats recline? About an inch and a half? Of course, there's so little room it does make a difference, I guess.

I think 3" on most planes. But when you are taller, it matters. You also cannot work effectively on a laptop (which I do often) when someone reclines their seats.

The extra inches matter 100x more to the person behind you than it does for your own comfort.

The 4-way stop problem goes to another level when you have 2 or 3 other people all being "Iowa Nice" and indecisive. I'm waiting for the day when all 2 or 3 of them finally surge forward at the same time and crash into each other because they aren't decisive enough to put on the brakes once they finally move.

I think there's actually a 4-way stop somewhere in the state where all four cars have been waiting for the other cars for 5 years now. Maybe longer.

I'll never forget about Letterman talking about stopping at a four way stop and a woman waving him through. He pointed out that you can't relinquish your right of way so he said, I didn't go anywhere - I have reading material in the car. He then proceeded to recount how she got mad at him because he wouldn't go while she had the right of way.

No, don’t believe I’m being self righteous in this situation. I didn’t say I park in the left lane and stay there. If I’m there and some jerk flys up on me and tailgates me, I’m under no legal or moral obligation to move over.
And it’s not illegal to pass another car from the right lane.

Definition of self-righteous: having or characterized by a certainty, especially an unfounded one, that one is totally correct or morally superior.

I guess it's perception, but from my perspective you absolutely are being self-righteous, especially in the words you used to refute.

I actually stand corrected on the legality of passing on the right. So you are correct that you are under no legal, and hard to argue morality unless we first agree on the basis of morals. As a Christian I would say that staying in a lane because you are mad at the jerk coming up behind you is not doing to others as you would have done to you.

This really is more of an issue of the person that is going below, or at the speed limit while flow of traffic is dictating a faster pace. So maybe you aren't the target of road rage, but road rage is crazy nowadays, and it comes from all of doing what is "best" for numero uno. And what you are doing is just adding to the rage. As I'm sure I do.

I think this is all summed up by the late great George Carlin:
“Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”

When working in an office setting, people who are overly loud at everything they do. Talk on the phone, you can hear every word they say. Movements are loud. They also add in their own touch of singing and talk to themselves. I never understood why people have to make sure they let themselves be heard.

Pokémon Go players in Walker Johnson Park in Urbandale. They must have added a spot there because there are always fat nerds with their heads buried in their phones wandering aimlessly in the middle of the bike path. I want to ram into them so bad on my bike.
This still happens??

Delta is testing reducing seat recline. Honestly cannot understand why anyone still thinks putting their seat back is at all acceptable anymore. And, I'm 6 3, and 275. I upgrade whenever possible to Plus, but still, it is not acceptable there either.

So then as a Christian (you brought it up), you think speeding is ok? See, that’s the problem here, and the end of your post touched on it—everyone thinks the way they do it is right. My whole point is that the left lane road ragers who freak out when someone is in that lane going slower than them are breaking the law themselves and have no morally and certainly no legally superior position from which to argue.

All of us could be better drivers and more courteous—definitely even those complaining about slower drivers in the left lane

Its not really about slower drivers in the left lane. It is about people who camp out in the left lane regardless of speed. If you are camping out just because you don't like how someone is driving and you are out to teach them a lesson, it is all the worse. They are called driving lane and passing lane for a reason.

Besides you just said above that you would be driving in the left lane at 10 over. So there is no moral high ground on speeding since you are speeding as well.

Sorry, very long read, and forgive me; I've grown to be a fairly bitter person...

Airplane landing - All those that stand up immediately upon landing, no matter what row they are in. Guess what? You're not going to magically disembark first if you're in row 30..

Highway driving - When I'm driving/passing in the left lane, those in the right lane that decide they need to cut in front of you at the last second, and then proceed to drive very slowly. I guess they couldn't wait that extra 5 seconds to let you pass.

General Driving - Please use your turn signal. That's it. Thank you.

Ames stoplights - Yikes. You'd think with the DoT headquarters in Ames, this would be better. It is not.

Cellphones/swerving/driving/etc - You're in a 2 ton or more vehicle. Pay attention. Also, for those that can't stay in the right lane whilst I'm passing in the left lane...Your random texts and facebook postings, etc, aren't very important in the grand-scheme of things. Please pay attention. Humorously, (to myself, anyway) I had my 3-year old daugher automatically says "get off your phone" all the time to other cars when I'm driving.

My Wife - If I've answered every single "what do you want for dinner?" with somethign like "Doesn't matter; I'll eat whatever you give me", it literally means...It doesn't matter; I'll eat whatever you give me.

Work/Being wrong - If you mess up/didn't know something, that's fine -- just say it; don't try to come up with some bs excuse. Work isn't going to fire you. I catch people doing this all the time.

Yardwork - I mean, yeah, I'm lazy, but I try to work on cleaning up most of my leaves in the Fall. My neighbors do not..Consequently, I get a lot of leaves in my yard.

Crowds - So full of rude people/people without manners, in general.

Left-Lane - If you're not passing, get out of it. It's not your personal driving lane.

Barking Dogs - I love animals. However, I do not love animal owners who don't give a damn what their animals do.

Never said i had moral high ground.

And frankly, it IS about slower drivers in the left lane. I’m on the road most days all over the state. I rarely if ever see someone just camped in the left. They may be there driving slower than you, but they have a right to pass also—they don’t have to get over behind some semi just because you want to drive recklessly fast. And I never claimed to camp in the left just because I don’t like how someone is driving—I said tailgating and flashing lights won’t get me to move.

Nope, and agreed to the poster that called me out for speeding. Which is funny that I was not wanting to break one law when breaking another, when the one I didn't want to break isn't even a law. I understand that I'm a hypocrite.

Safety is the main concern here. Going much faster or slower than flow is dangerous. Passing on the right is more dangerous than the left as we mostly do one than the other and why it IS illegal in some parts of the country that I've been. Anger and distracted driving are two of the leading causes of accidents. I try not to contribute to either of those. (I'm sure speeding is one of the other leading causes. When I worked for the DOT and met with the GTSB they were very much against raising the speed limit because as they stated "SPEED KILLS").

I hate when there are three lanes.
1 .Right turn only
2. Straight
3. Left turn only.

There will be a long line to go straight waiting at a light and some jerk drives all the way to the front in the right turn only lane and then wants you to let them in to go straight.
Of course if you don't they get angry as if you're the jerk.

Also people in the left turn lane with their turn signal on and when they get the green arrow they slowly crawl into the intersection as if they are having second thoughts about whether they actually want to turn left.

There is one in mason city that is a five lane entrance/exit road from businesses. 4 leaving and 1 to enter. Has gotten very worn down over time. Who has 80% of the traffic leaving? First few times I caught myself going the wrong way in a land and had to scramble over. I found another in a different town with a median. Busted balls for that 100 feet to get in the right direction lanes. When you see 4 lanes, you think that’s all of them, who puts 1 lane all by itself like a stinking bike lane.

I think it's awesome that you get asked!

Just start answering with very specific things and see what happens (even if you don't really care). Don't bother to check to see if these things are on hand. . .

"Cheeseburger"
"Lasagna"
"Fish fillet with rice and carrots."
"Bratwurst with mashed potatoes."

Yes, fat nerds are still a thing.

More driving peeves....

People who come up to a stop sign at approximately the same time as you, and so just slide through on one of those "California" stops. Really? You didn't have an extra 10 seconds?

People who sneak through at a 4-way stop when the person in front of them goes. I want to ram these folks.

People who do signal, but then drive for 13 blocks before actually turning.

All-time worst peeve, for me: Texters. They pi$$ me off. If I can, I'll veer at them and honk my horn.....the look of utter terror on their face is so worth it. And most of the time I get flipped off.
Yeah. I'm the butthead.

I don't think driving is intrinsically difficult, but I guess I could be wrong.......

Driving isn't very difficult, but it's literally one of the most dangerous things people do and they're not remotely close to understanding that part, hence the texting and such.

Speed pending, checking a phone takes the attention away from the road for many football fields' worth of distance in very little time.

I'm against it, but in some ways I'm all for it if it means people will just take themselves out of the equation...it's far worse when you read about other people or children etc. being killed by a texter/Facebooker. My hope for the texting driver in that case is they have to live with that the rest of the own life; it's what they deserve.
