Property Tax Increase

I just got a letter that the assessed value of my house went up $38,000 dollars from last year! I live in Waukee and my taxes are already high. I would try to dispute this, but I finished my basement a few years ago and the assessor doesn't know it is finished so my value would go even higher. I am not suprised my value went up, but that is a huge increase. Has anyone else noticed their taxes going up so much?

Isnt the value of everything in Waukee going up? Just looking at houses on the market it seems over the past 5 years the price of houses has really shot up.

You're lucky. Linn county assessors are worse than ambulance chasers. They drive around looking for contractor trucks or garbage dumpsters. When I replaced my kitchen cabinets, magically one of them showed up in my driveway asking to "look around".
LOL I'm sorry but this is hilarious. Freaking vulchers is what they are, the answer would be my place is a mess I'm sorry you cant come in.

The same thing just occurred in Burlington and home values aren't increasing, and neither is the population; which might be why the increase. Some of the increases I have heard are simply not rational.

The rural counties are just getting desperate. Ours has been at the max mill rates for many years already and the market values are flat at best. Property taxes really should be capped at 1% or perhaps 1.5% of market value MAX, ever. Over those levels and one can't afford to own much, you are really just renting while the land provides some value.

I live in Ankeny and I think I read ours are going down (not much, but I was still surprised)

I think counties could easily combine people and have one courthouse for a couple counties and such but keep supervisors proportional.

This is why the county assessors are roaming our neighborhood. My neighborhood is above average on the economic scale. So they troll around looking for anyone improving their property. Most all my neighbors tell stories about them "just stopping by" when they happen to have a contractor vehicle in their driveway.

They also can't decide how many supervisors they want. The county increased from 3 to 5 a few years ago, some people got pissed when they found out each supervisor was making 100K salary, so they voted to move back to 3.

Like I said in my original post, i expected an increase, but that much of an increase seems too high.

Are you going to contest it?

I tried that 2 years ago in Polk County. I literally bought my house 3 months before the new assessment came out so theoretically, that is market value. My assessment went up almost 15%. I contested and said my value is $X because I just bought it for $X. And I lost. Lol

Nope, but the assessors will take notice when the house sells and they will go look on the MLS or other sites looking for things like new basement finish.

Polk County assessors sure didn't notice it on my house (Johnston). We bought it in 2015 (basement already finished) for ~$25k more than assessed value. Getting ready to sell now for ~$55k over assessed value. Still no basement finish according to the assessor site, and it was clearly marketed each time.

No complaints here

When you think about some of the small counties, the ones with 12000 used to have 18k population 30 or so years ago and did everything manually. Many have more employees now and can do things computerized. A lot of wandering around when I’ve been into the local courthouses.

If they could do 50% more with worse technology. One set of workers at a courthouse should be able to handle two counties worth of work.

These old courthouses seem to suck money also. You don’t need these 1890 buildings that you throw 2X amount to build new just to make them handicapped accessible.

Well they are public bureaucrat's with no real incentive and a big county. I mean some probably take the job a little more seriously than others.

yall gotta start firing shots off in your front yard and throwing trash on your lawn. Keep the property values low.

Brand new house kiddy cornered from me sat a long time and took a pounding due to it. That is my comp if I need to.

The city is can’t sell bigger lots for 20k but think each of mine is worth way Moreno.

We just got notice last week that our assessed value actually decreased for the first time in 6+ years. Looking at our county assessor site (Muscatine), and looks like most of our neighbors had a similar decrease. Not sure what that means or if that will lead to a decrease in property taxes or not? Would be curious to hear from someone who has owned a home for a long time and what their experiences have been with this.

Property tax in Grimes is, Like Kurt Russell said in Used Cars "Too Fing Highhh". There are people that want to sell their house and can't cause the taxes are 10-11K a year

Small rural county. Last year they said everyone not farm/ag is going up 10% because the state required it. We could rebut the raise. Ironically I had been about to refinance in the spring and the bank had me get a new professional assessment. It ended up being by one of only about 2 in the county who do that. It came out almost exactly what the previous county assessed value was.

So I made a copy of the 26 page assessment, filled out the form and submitted it.

3 months later I got a one page letter denying my request with a 5 word explanation. "Insufficient documentation to support claim."

******* don't care about accuracy or fairness. Just give me the damn money!
