When Iowa making the NCAA was in doubt a couple weeks and about 40 pages of this thread ago, they were 5-5, and I said I thought they would go 5-5 down the stretch, finish 10-10. (In conference, I mean)

Having beat UM and IU on the road, I will now say they go 4-4 rest of way -- so a game better than I thought then. Still expect a WTF loss somewhere, like IU at home or at Rutgers. So this thread can get a new shot of argument juice...

Sorry, I don’t do “what about the other side. “ I’m just going by what I saw tonight. I saw Iowa throw up 4 terrible shots on one possession, with Indiana having no clue how to box out or rebound. The fift terrible shot of that possession somehow landed in an Indiana players hands. That game was trash basketball and anyone involved in that game should be embarrassed.

I'll say it, I think Iowa is pretty good. They remind me of one of the good Fred teams. No D, elite offense, results will be matchup dependent in the tourney, and they could absolutely lay an egg at any point.

The difference between now and prior years is I think they actually have some closers on the team, and in the past between Gessell and Uthoff had leadership on the team that was straight up chokers. That's the biggest difference right now.

If there was ever an ambassador for ISU, college basketball, or whatever was asked of J.O., you would never find a better one. He worked tirelessly for ISU and gave his heart and soul. He was probably the most personable coach I ever met.

Say what you want about their guys now, but they are at least not afraid of the moment. White and Uthoff pulled some serious disappearing acts when things got tight. Gessel tried, but it seemed like he just didn't get it done or hit the big shot.

IU hasn't been good for the last 4 weeks or so, but they have some talent, road games in conference are always tough, and getting a win when Garza is in foul trouble and struggling bodes well for them. It's not a great win, but games like this and @PSU are games their past teams lost and kept them out of the tournament or limited them to the 7-10 type seeds.

I agree with this. Gessell would have missed the front ends of those 1 and 1's last night and Iowa would have lost.

You know a team is really struggling defensively when they can't keep J Bo in front of them. Seriously though, when Iowa gets that kind of production out of JW, JB, and TC they will be a tough out.

I think the biggest difference is they are actually playing a point guard. Even one that isn't great, but at least Fran finally figured out that you need someone to fill that role and let everyone else do their thing.

I think the biggest difference is they are actually playing a point guard. Even one that isn't great, but at least Fran finally figured out that you need someone to fill that role and let everyone else do their thing.

My biz partner is a lifelong Hawk, and he thought the team last year would have been much better if HE was playing point for 30 mpg - and he is pushing 60 and a heart attack survivor.

The biggest difference is Wieskamp. It’s not just that Wieskamp is really good, it’s also the fact that Iowa no longer has to play Pemsl and Nunge at the 3. Playing the majority of the game with posts at the 3 position is a recipe for disaster defensively, and it clogged things up on the offensive side of the ball too.
