Iowa offering free tickets for the MSU game

So basically the eastern side sucks at attending games. I know if IC was on the Western side of the state and was close I would be there in a heartbeat. I was grasping at straws guys, tried way to hard lol
Maybe Iowa should buy AIB and move the campus closer to you.

Hawk fans are riled up as we get closer to “The Big Game”- a lot of pressure is building on them. They can’t sell out CHA which is a non-story after all these years but, most importantly, they know they need this one- if they lose or get drilled like they did @ East Lansing, everyone says, “here we go again”. I happen to think they might play out of their *ss and win- they’ve beat Sparty at home before. But it they don’t, look out- here come the pitchforks. So with all that pressure to win mounting, why not deflect some by attacking ISU football attendance?

But, hey, at least Jess Settles and Scott Saville believe in them!

If CB and Sioux City are considered close enough to Ames to get to games, then Des Moines is close enough to Iowa City. That ignores the fact that in DM Hawk fans are the majority, even western Iowa , there are still more Hawk and Husker fans than ISU fans. Creighton also sells out every night in Omaha.

Iowa City also has I-80, I-380, and Hwy 218 that all offer 4 lane travel. Eastern IA infrastructure is much much better than central and Western IA. Ames has I-35 and partial 30, everything else is 2 lane roads.

TO your point. I have been to a bluejay game this year, as it sits at a 30 minute drive for me.

I don't know a single basketball Iowa season ticket holder in DSM. I know a lot of people in NW IA that have Iowa State season tickets and drive a of minimum 2 hours and never miss a game.

The lesson is, never mention a town that's got about half the population of Washington, IA in a debate about attendance.

Quite a few of my friends have been going to a lot of Wild games lately. I may hit up a Wolves game once a year but it sounds like the Wild draw pretty well.

My 2 cents here, I think it has to do with location and during the week. That is my excuse. Lets face it, ISU is in the center of the state, a 2-3 hour drive will get you there from most of the bigger cities. Iowa City is pretty far for a drive on a week night for the western side of the state. Des Moines metro is closer or a 30 minute drive to Ames than Iowa City is at about 1 and a half hours. Boone, Jefferson, Fort Dodge, Carroll all within good driving distance. Easy to get off work at 5 and still get to the game. Des Moines you can not do that for a 6 game to get to IC. And even the eastern population has about a 2 hr or less drive to get to Ames. Sioux City and CB locations are not terribly far either, maybe 3 hours.

I also think some of it has to do with losing by 30 to them earlier in the year, and the thread of another Fran collapse that no one wants to be a part of again.

I live 2ish hours from Ames, but 4ish hours from IC.

It is also about 1200 bigger than Hilton and not as good as an atmosphere. Free tickets or not. The students need to go to games but are stuffed in the corner away from the court. I know those are excuses, but I am trying to rationalize it. I can not go to the game due to other obligations. I will have to miss it on TV too.
I still can't believe that you write this talking about Boone, Jefferson, Fort Dodge and Carroll for ISU and totally ignore the 250,000 people in the CR metro (about half an hour away) and the nearly half a million in the Quad Cities (about 3/4 of an hour away) for Iowa.

Not sure about the comparisons of population and distance, but I was really, really impressed at the turnout in Lawrence, Kansas on Monday night. There was a lot of traffic headed east toward KC after the game. No attendance problem there.
