Iowa offering free tickets for the MSU game

It’s funny that he uses your hometown, Carroll, to help rationalize how easy it is to drive to ISU games but he doesn’t use Davenport (same distance) or Cedar Rapids to compare to Iowa.

Those count, but they also have UNI over there. IDK, again I am trying to figure it out myself

My 2 cents here, I think it has to do with location and during the week. That is my excuse. Lets face it, ISU is in the center of the state, a 2-3 hour drive will get you there from most of the bigger cities. Iowa City is pretty far for a drive on a week night for the western side of the state. Des Moines metro is closer or a 30 minute drive to Ames than Iowa City is at about 1 and a half hours. Boone, Jefferson, Fort Dodge, Carroll all within good driving distance. Easy to get off work at 5 and still get to the game. Des Moines you can not do that for a 6 game to get to IC. And even the eastern population has about a 2 hr or less drive to get there Sioux City and CB locations are not terribly far either, maybe 3 hours.

I also think some of it has to do with losing by 30 to them earlier in the year, and the thread of another Fran collapse that no one wants to be a part of again.

I like 2ish hours from Ames, but 4ish hours from IC.

It is also about 1200 bigger than Hilton and not as good as an atmosphere. Free tickets or not. The students need to go to games but are stuffed in the corner away from the court. I know those are excuses, but I am trying to rationalize it. I can not go to the game due to other obligations. I will have to miss it on TV too.

Disagree. The Des Moines Metro + Ames population is not that different than Iowa City + Cedar Rapids + Davenport.

I am pointing out the hypocrisy of Iowa State fans. Iowa State can’t come close to selling out a game at JTS; at least Iowa sells out Carver on occasion. Iowa State also offers a bunch of promos in an attempt to boost attendance for football, just like Iowa has to do for basketball. I find it hilarious that you guys pat yourselves on the back for being the BEST FANS IN AMERICA!!!!, then make fun of Iowa basketball for doing the exact same thing your football program does.

They aren’t the same though.

I wouldn’t be bragging about 94% capacity in a year in which you played both Iowa and Iowa State at home, but maybe that’s just me.

To answer your question more pointedly, when the closest you get to a sellout in 2018 is several thousand tickets short in a match-up against a Top 5 opponent...then yes, I would say that constitutes not coming close to a sellout.

Boone, Jefferson, Carroll, and Fort Dodge have a combined population of 50,839.

The Quad Cities is over a quarter of a million people.

The quad cities is about 55 miles from Iowa City.

Carroll and Fort Dodge are well over 60 miles from Ames.

Johnson County has 150,000 people
Linn County has 225,000 people
Marion County has nearly 35,000 people

I can keep going....

Yep. It's those people from the metropolis of Jefferson that fill up Hilton.

Also, mentioning Carroll just proves that @CyTwins is a better ISU fan than Metrodome bathroom chick is an Iowa fan.

Please stop. Iowa has Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities right in their backyard! Hell, CF/Waterloo is only 90 minutes.

Most important game in years and tickets are free, LOL!

If Iowa was to win, they'd move to 4th place in the conference. The problem for Iowa is that they've only played one team in the top 4 and lost. In their next 3 games, they play the top 2 teams. Essentially, Iowa's conference record is completely inflated because they've beat the nobody's of the conference and lost to the good to decent teams they've played so far (Wisconsin, MSU, Purdue). My point is that this game in and of itself means substantially more to MSU as they try to win the conference.

Gary Barta said this 11 years ago:
"Attendance has been an issue that's on the table," Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said. "This isn't an issue that just emerged this year. It's been a deterioration over the last five years."

That same quote could be used today.

I said they have room for improvement for sure. But they are still in the top 30 for paid attendance. That isn't nearly as bad as some of you guys are making it out to be.

To further argue the numbers. Let's just agree for the sake of discussion the Des Moines Metro is 55/45 Iowa/ISU. Let's also argue the Cedar Rapids metro is 75/25 Iowa lean.

Des Moines Metro is about 650,000, so 325,000 population pool to attend an ISU event. Des Moines to Ames is 33 miles.

Cedar Rapids Metro is about 260,000, so

Yeah but their 5 game win streak.... (against combined 8-28 in the big 10)

Jefferson, Iowa: population 4,150. Wikipedia should add a paragraph about the 50,000 homeless people that live there and apparently only spend money to attend ISU bball games.
All those homeless live in culverts right? Sounds like a smiley face killer paradise.

So basically the eastern side sucks at attending games. I know if IC was on the Western side of the state and was close I would be there in a heartbeat. I was grasping at straws guys, tried way to hard lol

But no one is talking about paid attendance. That figure only matters to the AD. We are talking about atmosphere. Butts in seats. When 1/2 of your paid attendance shows up you have an issue.

Do you live close enough to make it to games?

So you are basically saying that ISU has a pool of 325,000 in their back yard and Iowa has a pool of 195,000 in their back yard?
