All Iowa Football Team---Post Bowl Edition

What percentage of the plays does Epenesa play generally? Is he a guy who can log you 2/3 of the snaps or is he more of the 1/3 type pass rush specialist? From what I heard, he is a pass specialist, I wonder what his durability and productivity will be if they double his reps.

He played less than half the snaps this last year IIRC but they're losing the two guys ahead of him so I would expect that to go up. I've heard he struggles against the run but he's obviously elite against the pass

I would expect him to be a 2/3 of the snaps kind of guy next year. First year he wasn't good against the run, but last year I thought he got a lot better. I'm not expecting him to be bad against the run next year.

I thought he was solid against the run. As Dexter said earlier, I think it’s more of a “keeping him fresh” for obvious passing situations. I would expect his snaps to go up, but as they do he’ll get less explosive plays per snap.

Before any trolls get upset around here, this phenomenon is seen with all elite pass rushers. It’s called getting tired.

Not arguing that at all. Keeping him fresh definitely benefited his pass rush when he was in. But the biggest factor for him not starting was that Parker Hesse was rock solid. Iowa had the luxory of using Hesse on run possible downs and then moving him inside on passing downs to bring in Epenesa on the edge.

I expect big things next year from Epenesa. I feel he has come a long ways as a player in the two years he has been at Iowa and he will be a monster next year.

If he’s not a top 10 draft pick next year something went wrong.

Willie Harvey no longer plays for Iowa State.
Brian Peavy no longer plays for Iowa State.
Hakeem Butler no longer plays for Iowa State.
David Montgomery no longer plays for Iowa State.

Derp.
To be fair you said post bowl, not entering 2019's season. You could have worded it better.

Jones “leads” Smith-Marsette by 5 receiving yards despite having ~ 20 more catches. Jones is nothing more than a check down receiver, whereas ISM is a much more dynamic player and more of a downfield threat. If you would rather have the WR who has averaged 9 and 8 yards per catch the last two seasons, have at it. I’ll take the dynamic playmaker with nearly equal production and loads more upside.
Again, how do you know Jones is nothing more than a check down receiver, based off your review of drive charts?

I kind of thought they were crazy not playing Epenesa more snaps in place of Hesse, but you are definitely seeing that trend where teams that have an elite pass rusher are limiting snaps and keeping them fresh for likely passing situations.

I don't know about Brandon Smith. Seems like he's a freak, but the first half of the year that kid was hopeless trying to catch even a routine ball. Seems like he'd make a great catch once every few games, but so many times the ball gets in on his body and he doesn't even get a hand on it. Dude needs to be dating a jugs machine the entire offseason.

He didn't start games but had over half the snaps in a few games this year. I think he can handle 2/3 of the snaps.

How am I supposed to understand your posts when you keep using all of these fancy technical terms?

Curious why Purdy was over Stanley but now you have Stanley over Purdy

Need to see what Purdy can do without Montgomery and Butler. I think Iowa State’s offense next year is going to be pretty awful so we will see if Purdy can take a step forward or if he will regress without those two guys.

Wouldn't you need to see what Stanley can do without Fant, Hockenson and Easley?

He needed a few games to build up his confidence, but from about the halfway point on he was pretty good. Both players and coaches have said that he catches everything in practice, so I don’t think his hands are an issue.
