Why didn't the Big 4 Classic work?

I see the value in a one off non con game against a good opponent at WF. Lock down DSM. I always find it odd that some people in DSM act like Ames is as far away as Iowa City. But some do.

This couldn't be any farther from the truth. The lack of fans attending both games is the main reason why the event seems so stale.

Have you been to this event? Ive only went every year in existence so I guess I dont know what Im talking about. Yeah, some fans who have game #2 dont show up right away for the first one, but there are plenty who do stay for both.

If they are so triggered by the sight of Iowa or Iowa State playing then thats their problem and the arena got the last laugh for making them pay for 2 games instead of one.

Lol, what does Iowa have to do with anything? If you think its because I want to see Iowa also thats fair, there are alot of people on both sides who stay for both games and will cheer for both teams. I've been to it with Iowa State and Iowa fans both, everyone gets along.

I personally think its cool to get to see all four state schools in one afternoon. The years when we had 3 tourney caliber teams competing on the same court made for great basketball those years.

No self respecting Iowa State fan cheers for Iowa.

I get along fine with the Iowa fans but I sure as hell cheer against them.

You guys can complain all you want about

-potentially losing to Drake or UNI away from Ames
-stale atmosphere
-being in the same zip code as Iowa fans
-being too difficult to walk 3 blocks for parking
-arena isnt basketball friendly
-Des Moines traffic is too difficult to handle
-Drake and UNI not bringing enough fans
--already playing in Maui
ect

.........but Im sorry to see this event go and I'll be there again this year. I think its been great for the city of Des Moines and hopefully they can get something back in the future.

I'm out on this subject.

Yes, I've attended the event. The number of fans that attend 1 game out number the fans who stay for both.

Kansas and K-State play at the Sprint Center every year and dont seem to have a problem with it. Manhattan is a good 2 hour drive from Kansas City anyways and we are talking a game 30 minutes from Ames.

If you cant get good teams to come to Hilton then why not schedule them at a close neutral site? Teams do this all the time all over the country. You act like this would be a huge disadvantage for Iowa State but it could also prove to be a huge positive. Its also good for the city of Des Moines for Iowa State to come here once a year.

No real advantage for ISU at all, nice for DM to collect the entertainment dollars, rather see those dollars spent in Ames.

Make it an actual tournament.
Iowa v UNI - since they’re the same fans
ISU v Drake
Both single session games on a Saturday.
Winners and Losers games on Sunday.

No chance I would go to both sessions. I would attend Iowa-ISU if it was the only time they met, probably.

I got the last laugh because they got zero of my dollars (cumulative) because of your last 7 words.

Iowa State got them the NCAA tournaments. I think ISU has helped DM and Wells Fargo quite a bit when it comes to basketball.

You're so triggered by Iowa basketball that you wouldnt pay to see Iowa State because Iowa is playing on the same floor the same day?

So I guess if we both got put in the same location for the NCAA tourney, but we were in completely different regions you wouldnt even go to an Iowa State tourney game against say Villanova or Duke?

Wow, just wow.

Lots of hot takes in this thread, lol.

My thoughts on why it didn't work:
1. As many have said, Iowa ended it due to their new scheduling. So technically that's the answer. :)
2. Someone did mention tv coverage, and I agree....it's kind of "out of sight, out of mind" if you do not attend and that may have contributed to less interest.
3.

I would just rather go to Hilton to watch a game and have no interest in watching drake, UNI or Iowa unless they are playing ISU. If I have to pay for both, I will buy tickets to two in hilton and enjoy two versus throwing one game away.

I honestly don't understand your last statement about not going to see ISU in a tourney game.

I thought you were done with this?
