Season is almost done, Cubs are poised to beat the Rays in the World Series, so lets talk end of the year awards.

NL MVP: Albert Pujols, STL
NL Cy Young: Tim Lincecum, SF
NL Rookie of the Year: Geovanty Soto, CHI
NL Manager of the Year: Joe Torre, LA

AL MVP: Justin Morneau, MIN
AL Cy Young: Cliff Lee, CLE
AL Rookie of the Year: Evan Longoria, TB
AL Manager of the Year: Joe Maddon, TB

Let the debate begin.

John Lannan should get more consideration for Rookie of the Year than he is getting. 21 quality starts out of 30, but he is on a terrible team.

I understand you logic... but do the people who vote on ROY even care about quality starts... I guess I don't even know who does vote for ROY... cybsball20?

Yeah, they would take that in for consideration. Soto deserves it, but if Lannan were on another team he would likely have 17-18 wins to go with his 3.89 era, not bad for a rookie...

NL MVP: Albert Pujols, STL probably should get it (just because Utley and Howard split a lot of votes.)
NL Cy Young: Tim Lincecum, SF (I agree here)
NL Rookie of the Year: Geovanty Soto, CHI (yep)
NL Manager of the Year: Lou Pinella, CHC (only because Jerry Manuel got the job 1/2 way through season)

AL MVP: Dark horse candidate Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox (Too bad Justin Hamilton trailed off)
AL Cy Young: Cliff Lee, CLE (yep)
AL Rookie of the Year: Evan Longoria, TB (close 2nd to alexei ramirez CWS)
AL Manager of the Year: Joe Maddon, TB (yep)

Don't know enough about the individual awards to comment. But the Cubs in the World Series? They're going to have to get through the NLDS & NLCS first. The resurgent Dodgers and the Phillies are formidable teams. And the Mets/Brewers can be good. This is going to be a great post-season.

IMO, the Cubs benefit from the demise of the Brewers and should be rooting for the Mets in the wild-card chase. They don't want to face a short Dodger pitching staff in a five game series. If the Brewers win the wild card, that will be the case (I think). And Manny at Wrigley? BABY.

The Cubs swept the Dodgers at Wrigley and split a 4 game series in LA this season. Granted, the Dodgers didn't have Manny... but the Cubs are the team to beat in the NL... and thats just the bottom line. We will have home field advantage and I would put our pitching staff up against the Dodgers any day of the week.

I don't disagree - and BTW the Cubs are my second favorite team. But the games are going to be played. My point is the Cubs are better off facing the Dodgers (assuming LA gets past the Phillies) over 7 games versus 5. Gives the better team a greater chance of winning.

And the sweep in Chicago was aided by two unlikely late inning comebacks. The Dodgers bullpen is healthy again for the first time in months, the starting pitching has solidifed, the young guys are playing lights out, and we have Manny now. Everything has changed since the last time these teams met - and we're talking about a series with tightened rotations, not regular season.

It's still possible Furcal could make it back. Here's to hoping Kent won't make it back (chemistry) although his playoff experience could be meaningful.

Honestly, Cub fans need to worry about Zambrano and also Woods out of the pen. You never know what you're going to get, and one game in a series changes everything.

What happened to Josh Hamilton over the second half? Didn't he have around 100 RBI at the break - he only finished with 124 for the season. Man, that's one rough second half.

I think you are spot on with most of these. I don't think you can debate Pujols, Lincecum, or Soto in the NL. I don't think Joe Torre should be Manager of the Year though. They have a $118 million/yr roster and they are just a few games above .500. I think Charlie Manual (Phillies) or Pinella (Cubs) should get it.

As for the AL, I think several people have a shot at the MVP. No question about Lee, Longoria, and Maddon.

on NL Manager of the year: I like Piniella, but I figured he wouldn't get it because they were expected to do well and have done well all year long. I agree Charlie Manuel would deserve it but just like the MVP or Cy Young, you can't win this award in half the season. I chose Torre over Sweet Lou because Torre has dealt with all those egos and the influx of Manny being Manny and ignited a fire under their butt. I wouldn't be upset with any of the 3.

I would like to argue that Ron G in Minnesota should be the AL Manager of the Year. He won't get it because the media loves the Rays right now, thank you Dickie V, but who really expected heading into the last week of the season the Twins would be in the playoff race?

I agree Tampa had a great year as well but I like Ron more.

I personally think Gardy should be up for it almost every darn year. Every year his team supposedly "gets worse" on paper and every year he gets the twins to compete with the high dollar teams. He's a helluva manager.
