Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

Getting the ball to Jacobsen in the middle of the zone will be the secret ingredient. Good ball movement will carve up Iowa’s zone.

TBH, we really haven't seen enough of that with this ISU team yet to know whether they are good or bad at it. The opponent just hasn't called for it. So this will be a good measuring stick at the least.

The one thing we are missing is the Naz and Thomas duo that is so deadly from outside that it stretches zones too much to play.

Neither Shayok, NWB, THT, Halli, MJ, or Lewis, etc. are Naz and Thomas, but they are 6 guys that are absolutely threats from 3 and not afraid to step up.

They're all also legit at getting to the hoop.

Our zone offense has not looked good so far this year. Jacobson has been fantastic but besides Walton(?) mentioning it in Maui having him in the middle hasn’t worked all that well.

A lot of that is the guards not getting the ball there, but To me his passing is still an unknown.

Pace of game will matter. Iowa will want a choppy, ugly, foul-infested slugfest. They could win that.

Clones will want open and free and fluid. Think they would smoke Iowa in that kind of game.

I think ISU will be OK as long as they hit shots, and THT doesn't try to play 6 tons of hero ball. He is great but sometimes he tries to do way too much.

Their zone isn't good thankfully

THIS. Did anyone watch their game last night? Holy crap Izzy is going to put out a new DVD and it’s called “”8th grade zone offense: how to beat a crappy zone D”

The entry pass to the middle of the zone was there all night. It was so easy. Entry to middle>kick to wing>easy entry pass to low block, MSU did that probably 20 times successfully. Iowa isn’t fast enough or long enough to make it work well. Iowa’s success is all dependent on how many fouls Tyler Smith can draw. It’s terrible basketball.

When have we played against a zone?

Iowa wants to play with pace too but they are just a really slow team but yeah, they will be looking to draw fouls early and often. IMO we need to rebound the ball really well. Iowa sells out for the offensive rebounds, so if we can gather that ball cleanly there should be opportunities to get out and run.
