All Iowa Football Team---Post Bowl Edition

ISU has some really crazy stats since 2017.

This year ISU is 2-1 vs AP top 25 teams
This year ISU is 1-2 vs non AP ranked teams

In 2017 ISU was 3-1 vs AP top 25 teasm
In 2017 ISU was 5-4 vs non AP top 25 teams

So basically over the last 2 years ISU is better vs the AP top 25 than they are vs non ranked teams.

This screams to me that ISU players and coaches just need to become more consistent. CMC is only in his 3rd year in Ames, and consistency takes time. I think next year ISU gets the consistency thing and could really break out and challenge for the Big12 title. I thought they had a shot this year, but they might have had too slow a September this year (I think that TCU loss is really gonna haunt ISU)

Now, don't get all oversensitive on me here, and actually really think about this next statement. Playing in the Big12 isn't that tough if you are a good team. By that I mean the Big12 will usually have 3 or 4 top 25 type ranked teams. So if you are one of those teams, you in essence will only face 2 or 3 top 25 type teams a year in the Big12. If ISU can get more consistent and can win 8 or 9 out of 9 games vs non top 25 teams, and then go 2-1 or 1-2 vs the remaining 3 top 25 type teams in the Big12 then you are in rarified air.

I really think ISU can get there next year. I think the key is the consistency vs the more average teams, the teams you are favored by 3 to 10 points to beat. Gotta win all those games or only drop one of them. That is what makes good/decent teams (8 wins) into top 15 type teams (10 wins), beating those you should 9 out of 9 or 8 out of 9 times.

Lol a fan of a Big Ten West team saying playing in the Big 12 isn't tough

It is tough when you aren't good. I mean if you are Kansas, that is brutal having to face 9 teams who are all better than you. What you will find is that when you are good, there are usually only 2 or 3 other top 25 teams you have to each year that are as good as you.

If that's the case how easy is playing in the Big Ten West?

I have said that we play to the level of our comp so far. That is often the sign of a young team. ISU does not have that many seniors starting relative to normal years.

Once you get outside the top 5, the clarity of who is the next 15-25 can be quite murky. Many times, it goes off sheer wins, if you were ranked starting the season, you can play the crappiest schedule and end up 5-10 area just winning out. If you stumble early and are unranked, it sometimes takes an act of God to get you ranked. So, I think it gets hard to know who is technically the top 6-25 teams out there. You can quite often see a bias on certain teams and where the reporters come from. I will use Texas as an example of always getting favorable rankings so it doesn't look like I'm picking on somebody.

Where the big twelve is more difficult than the big ten west here, IMO, is we typically always have a top 5 we will have to see and most likely twice if you count the ccg if we were to make it. Iowa can avoid any top fives until the ccg.

I think we are saying the same thing in different ways. I am saying ISU needs to be more consistent and you are saying they play to the level of comp. Basically if they are more consistent, they then stop playing to their level of comp.

I really think ISU has a chance of getting there next year. I think the remainder of this year will give us a good indication if they are trending in the right direction with this. Honestly ISU is as good or better than 5 of their 6 remaining opponents. If ISU goes out and wins 5 games to finish this year, I will be really bullish on ISU for next year.

Do you think ISU could win the Big Ten West next year?

I was agreeing with you in the comp statement. Purdy has really changed this team, he is similar to kempt in that he doesn't get crazy from a mistake. He also goes to his play makers, Zeb would sometimes try to find the "right" guy instead of sometimes just putting it up for butler or jones and saying, go get it. That is why they are play makers, they make it happen, let them do it.

He is different in he can run, this allows montgomery to have more space. I wondered if Zeb was told not to run since KK was hurt, but thinking back to last year, he did not run then either. The play that soured me on zeb (I think it was OU) was a zone read where he handed off and did a nice job with the play fake, only issue was he went 20 yards with nobody even looking at him since they knew he wouldn't keep the ball.

I do. Offensive line would need to improve tremendously though. If they do, they’d have a shot at winning the Big12 next year. Will Montgomery and Butler be back?

I would say no on Montgomery and have heard Butler was planning on coming back

That would be huge. Butler would be tougher to replace than Montgomery IMO.

Obviously things could change but last I heard his intentions were coming back. Montgomery is better than Butler but I probably agree with you just because of the talent in the RB room and who we have coming in
