Is Fran building a regional powerhouse or just calling Iowa fans idiots and morons?

Btw, wrong thread but since trolls are here it’s easier. What spot is Iowa ranked? Most hawks thought they would get ranked with a win (whereas I did not). I am guessing they aren’t since nothing has been posted yet.

It is interesting that all of the recent kids you see visiting mention that Pat is recruiting them or they something about a relationship with Pat. I guess you used every thing you can to try and get talent. It got their foot in the door, the problem is they aren't going to land these guys and then they are left with guys like Touissant because he refuses to recruit transfers of any kind.

BTW one of the reason Touissant was identified by EIU and committed was because he played with Pat in the past or at least that is what Iowa fans are saying...

They should have one of the most efficient offenses in the country. If they can even get to average defensively, they should be alright. I think they have enough guys that are capable of playing good defense (Cook, Moss, Dailey, possibly Wieskamp) that they should be improved on that end.

True that Iowa was very efficient offensively, but I think the argument that they can maintain a high offensive efficiency while being decent on defense is a stretch.
1. Getting to mediocre is a massive leap. Iowa was absolutely atrocious defensively. It's going to take a HUGE improvement to even be mediocre.
2. When you play oddball lineups like Fran tends to do you are creating mismatches on both ends of the floor. The more unconventional a lineup is in terms of positions, the higher the offensive efficiency and lower the defensive efficiency. If he's going to play more conventional lineups to match up and guard better, offensive efficiency is going to take a hit.
3. Similar to #2, I know people think it's a matter of simply playing harder on both ends of the court all the time, but there is simply a tradeoff. Players can either coast a bit on one end of the court, or you can get fewer minutes from your best players.
4. Yes there are some players on the roster that physically could be good defenders, but against major conference competition Iowa's current roster is usually going to be the less athletic team on the court as a whole.
5. There's nothing in Fran's history that suggests he's going to have a good defensive team, or that a majority of the players will defend at a level their length and athleticism suggests they are capable of.

I'm not saying it can't happen, but it's a whole hell of a lot more than a few guys playing harder and a couple incremental improvements in scheme and team defense.

You made some good points. I tend to think they'll make some modest improvements on defense but that will be coupled with some regression in their offensive efficiency. It really cannot get worse than things were last year.

Overall I think they'll see some improvement record wise but their weak schedule could put them in a Nebraska '17 situation. We should know a lot about a team like Iowa after the non-conference. Miss what little opportunities they have in November and December and they could be done by Christmas.

You make some mostly fair points. I take issue with only a couple of them. One, Fran has had a few really good defensive teams at Iowa in his tenure. It’s not like he has proven totally incapable of coaching on that side of the ball.

Two, Fran’s unconventional lineups last year were due in large part to zero guard depth. I am under no delusions that Connor and Wieskamp will be All-Conference players in their first year of college basketball. However, it is going to allow Fran to stop playing Pemsl, Nunge, and Baer at the 3 position, where they were trainwrecks defensively. And it shouldn’t hinder their offensive efficiency much because those three players contributed little offensively playing the wing anyways.

When he had players like Clemmons, Gesell and Woodbury who were actually good defenders but were very limited offensively

Those people were dumb if that is what they thought. Every self respecting Iowa fan knows that beating ISU usually means a drop in the polls like what happened after beating ISU 42-3 in 2016.

What'd they drop to in the polls after the win?
