Most Thursday nights, I stop off at the bar after work for awhile. Typical small town Iowa bar, BS and talk sports for an hour or so. Usually around 5 to 10 or so of us and pretty standard drinking crowd, beer and maybe a Black Velvet drinker or two. Everyone usually takes a turn buying a round. So here is my question...one guy who comes in occasionally is a double Makers Mark neat drinker. So where most are drinking a $2.50 bottle or $3-4 rail, he is drinking a $10 drink, where would you stand on buying a round in this case.

I will of it's my turn, since he always returns the favor, but I know it irks a couple of the others. Just curious. I couldn't imagine drinking that for the simple fact, I would not be functional after a couple.
 
If it bothers others but it doesn't bother you, it's not an issue.

I'm guessing it bothers you a little or you wouldn't have asked. You need to ask yourself if it's worth possibly upsetting the "good times" for an extra $6. You could always casually flip him a little crap and see how he takes it. Maybe he's just not a beer drinker and that's his drink of choice. I'm assuming he orders the same thing when he buys a round. However, if he orders a cheap bottle of beer when it's his turn, then, yeah, he's a ****.

If he's an okay dude and it doesn't feel like he's trying to mooch off everyone, just know what you're in for when you buy the round.

Unless you're going home with him at the end of the night or he buys you lunch from time to time to even things out, go ahead and get him something more in line with the rest of the crew.
 
I would say a 10 dollar drink is a bit excessive. I would tell him to put his big boy pants on and drink some beer. If he can’t do that just have him buy his own drinks and leave him out of the rotation on who is buying rounds.
 
I've never understood the social convention of taking turns buying rounds (particularly when some are worried about not paying more or much more than their share). It makes so much more sense for everyone to have their own tab, get what you want when you want it (the other problem with rounds) and pay for it at the end. If you want to buy someone or a group a drink go for it, but it makes more sense if it's out of generosity.

Most small town Iowa bars I've been to would mock the $10 drink guy. I thought you just got handed Busch, maybe Busch Light if you're a woman or a child, when you walked in.

I'm with you, it doesn't bother me to pay if he's cool. But rounds including MM should be separate from rounds including beer. If I were the Bourbon drinker (which I am) I wouldn't expect to be included in the round. Also, if I were the ONLY Bourbon drinker I'd switch to the beer everyone else is drinking. This guy might be an alcoholic.
