Ending Iowa's Dominance

Iowa was extremely fortunate to hire two good to great coaches who were content to stay in Iowa City. They were on their way to being a perennial doormat at the end of Fry's tenure, and hit a home run with the Ferentz hire.

All of Iowa State's good hires have left because we've never given them the support to make Ames and ISU anything more than a stepping stone. The university, athletic department, alumni base, and fanbase have never been in a better position to change that perception. With Campbell, it seems like we have the right guy to make us a consistent winner. With Rhoads, it always felt like McCarney 2.0. If we can keep going to bowl games and keep giving Campbell all the toys he needs, we can get to Iowa's level. It's going to take at least another generation to turn the tide from a fan number standpoint, but we've already gained significant ground there.

All of that and hope that Brian is nowhere near the leader or developer of talent that Kirk is. He obviously knows the recipe, but it doesn't seem like Brian is a chip off the ol' block when it comes to temperament.

i doubt very much that Brian will be the next Iowa head coach. I don't think Kirk is in any hurry to retire either.

I hope we can get to the point where our fans don't carry a massive chip on their shoulder. Everyone's always out to get us. It's not a good look.

It was a long-term look. How long do you think Kirk has? It seems pretty obvious Brian is being groomed.

One thing that's a little disconcerting to me is how we, along with a lot of other schools, offered Foster (a 4* kid I believe), and Iowa didn't.

Obviously when someone is a 4*, it's probably not a bad idea to offer him, but what did Iowa's coaches see on his film that we didn't? That's a little worrisome to me.
I’ve said it all along. His dad played for Iowa, he camped at Iowa and begged for an offer. When I saw some services rank him 4 star, I laughed. He’s always been really soft and does not have the approach to be a decent OL.

While thats true on paper it's hard to overlook 3-7 in the last ten and 5-10 in the last 15. Those numbers are certainly more relevant to recruits. I disagree whole heartedly about Iowa kids. We dont have to clean house with in state kids but we certainly need to be a little more competitive.

You do know there is a history feature on this site, right?

Not sure what Iowa coaches look for but they've always been good at taking dudes and making them into good lineman. I don't know what Gallery was rated but he wasn't really that good coming out of high school as in didn't really have a fit position, just happened to 6'8 with decent feet and a wide frame. From a town of maybe 800 people.

Gallery was well thought of as a 6'7 TE when he came out.

McCarney already ended their dominance. Now it’s a 50-50 rivalry with Iowa having some luck in really tight games the last few years.

Some of you are so easy to troll

McCarney made it a rivalry again. And we've had a few wins here and there since, but calling it 50-50 is disingenuous. I have no doubt we can beat them any given year, and being 3.5 point underdogs at their place shows the gap is shrinking, but we're still behind. If Campbell sticks around, this rivalry is going to get more intense than it already is.

It’s literally 50-50 since then

Since when?

Since the McCarney hire, we're 10-14 against Iowa. In the last 20 years, 9-11. They've won 4 straight. Many of Iowa's wins have been blowouts while most of ours have been close. Acting like we're on equal footing requires a little ignorance.

Were we dominant 4 years ago when we’d won a couple more since we broke the streak?

Rhetorical btw, I’m tired of bumping a troll thread.

What do we need to do to break Iowa's football Dominance? While we have been much more competitive over the last 15-20 we've never been able to get over the hump. What makes it more difficult to stomach is that Iowa has been able to accomplish what it has with a roster full of Iowa kids. Their two deeps and roster are both full of Iowa kids. These are kids who have grown up seeing a much more ISU competitive program (on a yearly basis) than the kids of 15-20 years ago. Yet year in year out Iowa gets their pick of the most talented in state kids. They also seem to have several key players each year that passed on scholarships at lower levels for an opportunity to walk on and end up being big time contributors. While no one can doubt this staffs activity level the jury is still out if they will effectively be able to bring in quality out of state talent on a regular basis. Would they be better served trying to take on Iowa for top in state talent? What needs to change to end Iowa's dominance on the field and regarding in state recruiting? Is it even possible in the current environment when they enjoy such a massive revenue advantage?

Yeah we've gone 10-11 against Iowa in the last 21 years. Dominating:eek:

It's virtually a 50/50 split since breaking the Iowa 15 year streak. ISU is 10-11 over the past 21 years in the series. But, ISU has only won 5 of the past 16 CyHawk games. No one 20 or under will think of this as an even series.

ISU has built up their facilities, has built up the fan base, has built up their enrollment. They have the ingredients for a step up, but there is still a hill to climb. ISU is more relevant in the state than in the past, but not winning recruiting battles with Iowa now. That can change. Iowa has more name recognition outside of the state. With Iowa in the Big Ten and ISU in the Big 12, I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Dominance? I ended my career 4-0 vs Iowa, I'd say they weren't dominant during that time.
