Falcons at Eagles tonight. I'll take Atlanta. It's hard to believe the Eagles won't regress a little with the brain drain after their OC and QB coach both took other jobs. Plus I think they've been a little too chatty this offseason. And Nick Foles is a nice story but I doubt the postseason magic carries over into the new season.

The NFL and its rules are making it an ugly game. If I heard correctly last night... Did you know they made a new rule where if the QB draws a lineman offsides it is no longer a free play? They call it dead.

It was an extremely sloppy game. Not a great start to the season. The league office has to be hoping for a better on-field product this weekend. And apparently the new catch rule hasn't solved anything. Still vaguely defined and totally subjective.

I like how the Dlinemen are supposed to avoid landing on the qb, kinda hard to fully avoid that.

That rule and the "full weight" rule were news to me. Apparently defensive players are no longer allowed to land on a QB with their full weight, and it came about in response to Aaron Rodgers' broken collarbone last season. How on earth is a defensive player supposed to bring a QB down anymore? Can't toss 'em to the ground, can't land on them...thanks a bunch, Anthony Barr.

I understand not driving them into the ground, it the full body weight is tough if you catch them square on. Either Qb has to go back to in the grasp rules or we need to allow something. Running qbs complained about in the grasp but you can’t have it both ways.

I used to think that was just hyperbole by aggro meatheads. But seriously, how is a defensive player supposed to tackle a QB without incurring a penalty?
I think what's happening is that the NFL was getting destroyed over the concussion and CTE issues, and now they're overcompensating with rules that are maybe making the game safer and definitely making it less fun to watch.

Too many of the rules are now vague and subject to interpretation. Where do you draw the line between tackling the QB with your full weight or just 80% of your weight?
In regards to a catch, It seems the majority of fan see 1 or 2 replays and can make a judgement on a catch yet the officials will look at it for 5 minutes and rule contrary to what 95% of objective viewers believe and then come up with some cockamamie explanation why.

Makes sense, some times that guy never stops and has a free rush at the QB.

I missed that. I think the refs have always had the discretion to blow the whistle if the defensive player has an unabated path to the QB. So unless there was a rule change I missed (totally possible considering the league can't help themselves) free plays are still a possibility, but the official can whistle a play dead if it's a safety issue.

This. There wasn't a rule change. They are just telling refs to blow the play dead earlier. There still can be free plays, but they just want fewer of them. There were a couple of free plays in the game last night.

Which is all fine and good. I love watching a good QB draw a player offsides and then take a shot downfield or pick up a cheap first down - Peyton Manning was an absolute master at it - but the refs should have the discretion to protect the QB from himself, too.

As a Vikings fan, I love the new emphasis on blowing those plays dead quicker. Aaron Rodgers/Vikings D-Lineman have been making me turn away from the TV in disgust when he pulls one of our players offsides with his hard count.

Brilliant play and all the props to him, but I hate it.

Teddy Bridgewater is the master of getting the other team to jump on running plays, which is werid.
