Who is accountable for this? Someone has to be in charge right?

Government entity. Unless there is some kind of splashy sex crime involved, no one will pay any attention really, so no accountability.

I have a relative who works as a fairly high-up official (not elected) in a large Iowa city, and he says basically if he doesn't molest any children he will never get fired.

That has to be the lowest bar to keep a job I've ever seen.

I'm sure this will help the universities in the state get more funding and not give law makers more excuses to make more budget cuts...

My goodness. What a mess. What a pathetic university...

For some reason I just don't think the "wave" would be the same with an enormous repossession notice over the children's hospital.

Glad they have a great facility to treat children, thankful it's in our state, but it's too bad that credit is going to an institution that can't manage to pay it's bills or comply with a Court order.

No, they will go straight to the We Need Moar for the Kids excuse.

Welcome to city governments. Ex wife works for a city in eastern Iowa and it's the same there as well. A co-worker of hers literally does online shopping half the day everyday. Upper management won't fire her because they don't have too.

Kinda funny how hawk trollers on here brag about how much money they bring in from the Big 10 contract but don't say a word about how the university is in debt.

Agree on trolling about how much money is brought in by a TV contract is weak sauce, but not sure what we Iowa fans should be saying about the cost overruns for the hospital. It's embarrassing, but really a separate issue from athletic department revenue. Of course, if you want to make comments about owing $6M or however much to the old field hockey coach and the former assistant athletic director that's fair game for wasting money.

The management of construction for the children's hospital is beyond absurd.

When I went with my sister to chem, they had decent stock of refreshments and such at the beginning. Second wave, it was coffee and graham crackers. A vending cart was pushed around to buy from.
We had great care at the U of I. The dance marathon does a lot of good there too. They provide a lot of food and drinks for families.

Too bad that this is happening, when its not really necessary. Sell the painting, hire more employees.

I have been looking through the thread and have a question. Can the hospital even sell the painting? Was the painting donated to the hospital and therefore, unable to sell it?

The reason I ask the question because when I worked at Cerner (Healthcare IT) there was a guy that I talked to that used to work at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. He said that the hospital always had money issues to the point where they would delay paying their vendor's invoice past the payment date. It was a regular occurrence he said, but the hospital would eventually make good on the vendor's payment. However, because of the poor financials at the hospital, he always said that morale was low and the pay was poor. Hospital employees always complained that the hospital was spending millions of dollars on new gadgets, buildings, artwork, etc. and the employees continued to see poor pay. However, he said that the reason why the hospital would spend money of all of this other stuff is that they received it in the form of donations, and you don't turn down donation money. So for artwork, while it may have been commissioned for millions of dollars to be used at the hospital, the hospital could not sell it because of the terms set by the donor.

Olsen donated money for a building by trice. It’s getting tore down soon. If something is donated it can be sold. It’s yours now and your wishes. They don’t sell it because some people may look poorly on it.
