Honest question here - not trolling. Where did the "swarm" come from/the meaning?
It comes from Hayden when he instituted how they came out of the tunnel for games in a tight group holding hands.
Gavin Williams was in Iowa City today and named Iowa his favorite in an interview with Rivals after his visit was wrapped up.

It’s a storied tradition they created themselves and definitely isn’t something most other schools have done for decades before. Similar to how they originally created their traditional Pittsburgh Steelers uniforms and how they originally created the Gator Chomp that they do because of tradition.
One bit of information that most don’t remember is that the gator chomp replaced the tomahawk chop when they decided it was not correct for there to be any Native American references in sports.
Heck, consider they are so original that they had to use the state nickname as their own.
