Yeah, he was up near #40 in the rankings a year and a half ago, then had a pretty serious leg injury that kept him out of AAU altogether. Hence the drop in rating, because nobody had seen him regularly on the trail until a few weeks ago.

Someone mentioned there may have been some grade concerns or something but that must be gone now. He was dismissed from his high school team in the Spring for violation of school rules. Not sure what that means.

Grades might have been brought up since he transferred schools but according to Halsted he's good to go. Great addition since it's such a low risk high reward pickup

Not grade concerns I said “school concerns” just moving to a new school and settling. The staff wanted to see how that all played out and if he was able to refocus himself on basketball after some life changes and a serious injury.

I heard the staff would have preferred to wait longer to take him but their hand was forced by other schools getting re-involved.

Not making anything up. Halsted published an article listing Newell's offers after he committed to ISU and Iowa was not one of them. He did list Iowa as showing interest.

Thanks for the info. I saw an article that described him as "A top prospect in the class of 2019" and another that had him at #44 at the time of the article. Not surprised he was as high as 20, though, cause he certainly had a lot of hype around him in 2016.

Halsted confirmed Newell had an Iowa offer to VIP members so not sure what you're saying
