Is anyone besides me not to awfull worried about them? I think with the no huddle style offense that we run they will be gassed as the game progresses. Also, as we have seen in the past, they like to match LB's on receivers because of their defensive style...didn't really work too well. If we line up with 3WR in shotgun they shouldn't be a real factor(unless someone comes in unblocked).

i hope we dont have to double team Mitch King all day. that will help with everyone else.

I agree Crimedog. Last year we came out and ran the spread offense against Iowa and this last week we came out running the spread against Kent State. I think that was actually to prepare us for this coming weeks game. I thought it was a relief to see that. I expect much of the same this week. We will definitely move the ball on them. I just hope we limit our miscues and can convert in the Red zone.
I also hope we see a blitz package out of our defense like we haven't seen this year. If we can get to Ricky Bobbi early I think we can make it a long day for the Hawks. Go Clones.

I really don't know what to think of Iowa's front 7. I think they might be good, but not the great status that the media is painting them. They will be tough to run on, but the Hawk usually are. That is just part of the scheme they run. If they can't get pressure on the ISU QBs, their pass defense will not be very good.

Regarding our rushing performances thus far, I just don't think that Scales has the vision to be really effective in a zone read scheme. He's servicable as a power back when you really need to get a yard between the tackles. But when you tell the o-line to push the defense whichever direction they want to flow and make the runningback read the blocks within one step of getting the handoff, he just doesn't seem to have the ability of A-Rob or JJ. I'm guessing his two (or more??) injuries have contributed to this as well. The o-line was opening holes against Kent State, Scales just didn't seem to find them or hit them quite fast enough.

If their front seven plays sound assignment football, I'm hoping we can get 3 - 4 ypc. If they are overaggressive and flowing/overpersuing, I think our backs may be able to find some creases on the backside and get some good gains.

I remember last year before and after the ISU/eiu game. All we heard about was eiu's defense was so good, that they had not even allowed a TD all season. It was so fun after last year's game to remind them that they still had not allowed a TD, but still got beat by a better team. I was told this year eiu had only allowed 3 points and could shut out ISU. I hope we hang 30 on them. I have not seen much of their front seven, and no-one has seen them this year against anyone with a decent offense. I think we can have a good offense, not just decent, and hope we show them all the areas they need to work on. Likewise, no-one has seen them against a decent defense, and I believe Chizik will have our defense playing decent this Saturday. Our front seven may not be all-Americans, but we are miles better than what eiu has played to date.

I really think that if we run 3 WR with a TE in the "Check with Me" offense, it is really going to create match up issues since their week corners are going to need help. That leaves LB's on either the 3rd WR or TE...I really like our side of things if this happens!

Agreed, the "check with me" offense should help us since they're defense typically does so little shifting anyway. I noticed several times against Kent State that after the QB got the call and turned back to the line of scrimmage, the defense would make adjustments to their alignment. As I recall, Iowa usually just lines up and plays.

Seriously, the more storminspank brags about them in the other thread, the more and more overrated I'm beginning to think they really are. Always seems to work out that way - Iowa fan brags => thing bragged about ends up being overrated.

I'm worried about this crap:

The only significant difference you'll see on the line from last year is Clayborn. He's very good, though. He didn't come on until late last year and was still getting his feet wet, but by all accounts he had a great offseason and in the first two games he's looked like our best lineman against both the run and pass. At the very least, he's looked a LOT better against the cupcakes than Iwebema/Mattison ever did.

Obviously Ballard is new as well but he hasn't done much to make good on his potential yet. Coleman is pretty good against the run (though he hasn't looked as sharp as many fans remember him being last year) and pretty terrible against the pass, and his backup Angerer is roughly the opposite. Hunter's not spectacular but is pretty solid in both facets. Edds has seemingly stepped up his game and looks really good thus far, especially in coverage.

I really think Clayborn's the best lineman on either team, though (both sides of the ball). If he struggles against better competition, it should be more of the same in the pass game. If not, we'll see how well Arnaud/Bates do against heavier pressure.

Iowa's D-line has not been that great for a long time.

Our offensive line has been poor so it will make for a good matchup
