2018 Cap City League

I don't think strength will be an issue for Halliburton. It's not like ISU is looking for him to start, realistically we're talking 5-10mpg in spot duty and mop up. Halliburton getting PT will come from his ability to: 1) Run the Team 2) Play Defense

He has the added benefit of being 6'5". As long as he has the quickness to stay with shorter guards, his length could give perimeter jump shooters fits.

The other thing I would consider as a basketball coaching staff is the recent redshirt rule changes in college football. IMO within 1 or 2 years college basketball will have a similar rule, allowing a redshirt even if a kid plays 10-12 games per year or maybe within a total minute cap.

I can't remember the last time ISU had more than 8 guys that were 1. eligible to play and 2. Big 12 level players.

Not saying we will or won't RS anyone but we haven't really had a chance.

The one year they did there was a RS in SDW. We had Clyburn, Mc3, Niang, Ejim, Lucious, Babb, Naz, Booker, Jr year Bubu, and Percy coming off a strong FR campaign.

Other than that year you're looking at Edozie-like guys as the 8th or 9th man.

I know you hardly ever RS anyone in basketball, but could we see Halliburton get a RS? He just looks SO skinny. He has talent obviously, but he is so thin he's just going to get tossed around I think.

Considering we never play more than 8-9 guys most nights, it would make sense to redshirt someone unless we plan on going to a press and playing sir hack a lot/huggy ball. Keep in mind during the Hoiberg years we almost always had at least two transfer guys sitting out and this year it’s only one sit out transfer.

I dont care if bball players rarely redshirt Prohm will never go more than 9 deep once conf season rolls around nor should he..This isn’t Iowa. Its ok to redshirt in fball but not bball? I get that in fball u have to just grow physically moreso than bball..i get it i played it. But in regards to TH and GC it could end up being a big waste of a year if they don’t.

So the NCAA made a new rule for fball freshman to play 30% of the year and not lose eligibility but not basketball? Makes sense.

If a guy can’t be a productive player in 4 years than he most likely transfers and uses a RS. Not sure why people still try to argue for redshirting

Because sometimes they are skinny, and need the year of physical development before they contribute productively. If they haven’t done that, they can grad transfer. Not sure why anyone would argue against redshirting.

In my opinion it is always good to add as many new players you can every year. If you need an extra year to bulk up that’s fine, that’s what freshman year is for. If someone can give me examples of players that used a RS and then went on to be a 4 year contributor maybe I’ll change my mind.

Halliburton is the skinniest incoming freshman that I’ve seen since the advent of serious strength training for basketball. A RS wouldn’t surprise me.

Naz.

No he didn’t. He was the same class as Georges and only medRS his senior year. Unless I’m completely forgetting something

Sorry, I read your reply wrong, but he could have benefited from the freshman redshirt. Scored less than 2 ppg as a freshman then saw a big sophomore jump after many people wanted him to transfer on here

You can't force players to redshirt. You just have to sit down and be honest with them.

Look, <insert name here>, some years you might come in here and be a starter or top guy off the bench but this year we are loaded and playing time might be hard to come by. What we really need from you this year is to be the best possible scout team player and prove to me that you deserve playing time over someone else. I think you could really benefit from a redshirt year so you can concentrate on school, getting stronger and helping your team on the practice floor. If you don't want to do that, you'll have to prove things on the practice court. To be honest with you, right now you're probably on the outside looking in and minutes will be hard to come by.

Eh, he’s skinny but I don’t think he’s any smaller than Monte was coming in here. He looks skinnier because he has super long legs and wears his shorts really short.

I think a redshirt would be fine for him but for many reasons I don’t think he will.

Personally, I’m excited about him. He’s just a smooth basketbsll player.

Yeah I think he'll be good. I can't decide if he can play PG, but he's long enough where he could almost play the point forward position like Clyburn.

He can be a very versatile player for us with his size and comfort handling the ball.

He's skinnier than Monte was. I'm not advocating or predicting a RS. Just saying it wouldn't surprise me. Getting him some PT for a smoother transition next year is always a factor.
