I'm going rogue and posting my own Friday 5. Besides its always better to ask for forgiveness later than permission first.

A desk job and a long commute allow me to listen to music at least 8 hours a day. So here's my way of stealing your favorite music and claiming it as my own.

My top 5 as follows:

1.) Arctic Monkeys

2.) Red Hot Chili Peppers

3.) Aerosmith (Video below NSFW)

4.) Blossoms

5.) Tame Impala (Video below NSFW)

I also can often get about 6-8 hours of music in a day if I don't have a ton of meetings.

But it's much harder for me to narrow it down to 5 artists. I enjoy 4 of your 5 picks though. I usually end up listening to a large variety of artists unless I get on a specific artist kick and listen to a full album.

I do like 4 of your 5 five picks though, and I haven't heard of the 5th (Blossoms) so I'll check them out.
Personally I like Arctic Monkeys first two albums more than their recent stuff. The recent singles are much more radio friendly, and I'm glad they are making some money, but the early stuff has more personality in my opinion.
I've always liked RHCP, but they are on the alternative stations so much that I usually don't listen to them much on my own, unless I want to listen to Mother's Milk or Uplift Mofo Party Plan.
Aerosmith will always be classic. Again I usually listen to the classics more than the 90s era tunes, but that's just personal preference.
Tame Impala is a great group as well. The Less I Know the Better is just a fantastic groove. Love it. I like a few of their other songs, but not nearly as much as that one.

I'll have to think about my 5 for a bit.

It's a revolving door, but right now:

1. Mutemath

2. Relient K
3. DMB
4. Barenaked Ladies
5. Anberlin

HM: FallingUp, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Everclear, Green Day, Offspring, Switchfoot

I haven't met an Arctic Monkey's song I dislike, but the first two albums are my favorite as well. But they weren't going to be the 19 year old boys from Sheffield getting into trouble at local pubs forever. One of the things I appreciate about them the most is that I can listen to album #1 to album #6 without hearing the same thing over and over again. They're constantly evolving their music, coming up with new ideas, and in this day in age that is an underappreciated quality.

Have you tried spotify? Allows me to control the songs I listen to without having to deal with the frustration of the occasional station song I don't want to listen to. With my heavy listening habits its easily the best $10 I spend a month.

I'm not sure I can narrow to 5. Some long-term favorites:

- David Bowie
- Beastie Boys
- Billie Holiday
- Beck
- White Stripes/Jack White
- Jay Z

I've got so many more go-tos, but they're more recent artists with less of a catalog...

Have you given the latest Arctic Monkeys album a listen? Many similarities to Bowie's stuff. I think you'd enjoy.

Okay last Monkeys post I'll flood this thread with.

I loved the Arctic Monkeys' first couple of albums, but I haven't listened as much to the most recent stuff (except a single or two from the newest one). I'll have to give the new stuff a listen - I'm always looking for Bowie-esque stuff! :)

I use the new Napster app. It used to be Rhapsody but they rebranded with Napster. I can listen to pretty much any song I want and add favorites to my library to play on random or add to playlists. They also have their own playlists so I can listen to random music and find new songs as well. It is also $10 a month, with a deal for a yearly subscription, so I'm pretty happy with that.

I tried Spotify and didn't like it much, but I never tried the payed version, so that would probably help.

A band I've been listening to lately that seems very Bowie-inspired is Suede, released as The London Suede in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suede_(band)

Lead singer has a very Bowie-esque voice IMHO.

I had a classmate get me into them a while back! It's been FOREVER since I've listened to any, I might have to go down that rabbithole this afternoon!

Bands that have been in heavy rotation on my Spotify as of late:

1. Radiohead (always)
2. Neutral Milk Hotel
3. Stephen Malkmus/Pavement
4. Carseat Headrest
5. Built to Spill

Others on regular rotation: Childish Gambino, The Wrens, Dismemberment Plan, Modest Mouse, Wilco

So many of these and @Gonzo's selections were way up there for me. I love Brit rock so much. And I hope Gambino has a long, long career.

this is today. Tomorrow it might be different since it didn't say "all-time". In no particular order.

Wilco
My Morning Jacket
Ryan Adams
Beck
The National

Honorable mention today: The Decemberists

Just a huge yes to literally all of this.

Isn't it funny how you can call a Decembrists song from, like, 50 paces? I remember hearing something on a Spotify playlist that was new, thought it was probably them without looking, and then heard a really long word that was used organically. I had no remaining question in my mind that it was them from then on.

In no particular order:

Belle and Sebastian
The Shins
The Decemberists
The Avett Brothers
Modest Mouse

Wildcard:

Outkast

1. Iron Maiden
2-5 in no particular order
Judas Priest
Ozzy Osbourne
Ronnie James Dio
Tygers of Pan Tang

I pretty much like anything from the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal era. I like a few American metal bands(Motley Crue, Cinderella etc) but NWOBH is the majority of my Spotify traffic.

And yes I'm old and still like the same jeans(levis 501), same pizza(Scornovaccas), same sports teams(Cyclones included) and same wife as I did in the 80's.
