Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

I love the fact that Marial Shayok isn’t even being thought of. I don’t think it’s a reach to think at worst he’ll be 3rd team Big 12. I can’t wait to see him in some uptempo offensives schemes.

It's kind of nice that our roster improved instead of just standing pat.

Might want to tell that to Fran who was saying before his freshman year how he was going to be an immediate impact player in the Big Ten

Well the teams he played on were
NIT runner up
NCAA play in
NCAA 2nd round
NCAA 2nd round

Not a bad 4 year career for those guys. But remember Fran said he would be an impact guy right. That shows he had no impact whatsoever on the Iowa seasons when he was there.....

There was improvement on each team he was on. Was he an NBA talent, no, but neither were all those ISU all stars either. People have impacts on teams in different ways. Safe to say, the impact of those guys was decent. Did not go as far as I had hoped though. That was on Fran but they were successful teams for sure.

With all the limitations Fran has caused, he has also done good with the program. Now he needs to take the next step. I have hope he will, I have seen him fail, I have seen him succeed. It is up to him and the players to improve next year.

Your roster has improved, it is a shame Iowa did not try to get a player of Shayok caliber in this transfer cycle.... on the other hand their really was not much to pick from for this cycle compared to most years. Iowa is limited because of some university restrictions also. Iowa does not do the transfer route if they do not see a fit or interest. Not sure why but we will see if it works for them in the next year.

Well jeez struck a cord with that guy. He was a project for a big man, if you could not see that then you dont know much about big men and developement in college basketball. He was not a 1 and done? I dont get how he was not a project there.
Woodbury was #50 on the Rivals final ranking. The center closest to him in that same class was Robert Upshaw at #52.

This is what improvement looks like. Note that he went from Fresno State to Washington between these two years.

Robert Upshaw

Lol what?

Also there were quite a few transfers this off season that would have helped Iowa a lot this year

He has 2 tourney appearaances in 8 years. Lol how can you possible say that?

To add to that. 2 NCAA is better than none like the previous coach. and 3 NIT is also better than the previous coach. Frans track record looks a lot like Alford actually if you look at the stats side by side.

How can you say 2 tourney appearances in 8 years is him doing a good job with the program? Honest question

He did not strike lightning like Hoiberg. He had to build his first 2-3 years doing it his way. I respected that. Then we had NCAA appearances 3 years and made the field of 64 2 of those years. I saw that as improvement. Then the 2016-2017 year was a rebuild and I expected NIT or bubble, got the NIT. This past year was the outlier to me. Bad year but looking back I can see why. Bad recruiting, transfers, injuries, leadership, lack of adjustments. It all added up to a crap year. But I can see that we will more than likely improve. Without Cook it would be a monumental task, but with him I can see a real improvement from 14-20 wins if we get things sorted out.

I said he has done good and bad. He is on the fence for me right now as the future of the program but because I am a fan I am giving him a chance to prove himself and see this thing through.

You make it sound like Fred walked into a great situation. Fred didn't "strike lightening" he went out an built a basketball team and took Iowa State to the dance in year 2. Don't discredit what Fred was able to do just because he didn't do it "the right way."

God bless your soul that you believe this and are an Iowa fan. If this account is a Cyclone fan screwing with us then bravo!! You got me!
