Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

Equally bad. Yay.

How did ToE finish during our Tournament years, comparable or nah (or maybe I missed the part where this discussion existed only in the vacuum of last season, which is possible)?

Stop it, I did not want to bring it up but UAB rings a bell

Ok then, Cartwright was not good at basketball his senior year and Pemsl is never going to improve, got it.

Both got worse. That's all I'm trying to say and you went off the deep end trying to pretend that wasn't true when it's a fact

Just going off the stat model that you are using for Cartwright and Pemsl, Cook has improved under Fran in all areas minus 3pt% going 1-7 last year as compared to 2-8 the year previously.....

But according to you he is hindered by Fran because of an analysis by someone bashing Fran because he has an unbiased opinion on the matter. What about the biased opinion? You say that does not count? but most of what you post is based on the biased opinion of writer x or writer y, or an article that is formed from biased opinions..... I am not following what you are posting because you have changed your mind on what is right or wrong some many times. is it stats? unbiased opinion? or biased opinion that can be used to describe Fran?

Cartwright played more games as a senior and Pemsl played 32 games last year...

When did someone named Cartwright play for Fran? All I’ve got is Hoss and Little Joe. Granted I only watch when they play us but I don’t remember this player at all. Was that early Fran?

Played Fran's first year IIRC and was pretty good as a JUCO then was awful his senior year. No injury or nothing, just got way worse under Fran

Of course they could but with Fran's track record and the roster limitations it's highly unlikely they'll improve much if at all

I agree with you, but the ISU crowd has read that I somehow think Iowa is go to be awesome. I dont think they will be but it is possible they can be above average. I have literally stated that I think it will be hard and the peak Iowa could achieve is 20 wins because we could have improvements but most ISU fans on here get on their high horse and say woah slow down Iowa cant do that did you see them play last year.... yes I did, but I also have seen Fran win 20 games before so I know it is possible if he has the right pieces.

You saying Iowa could win 10 or 11 Big Ten games next year is pretty crazy IMO. You just don't have a talented roster and your coach is below average

In 6 of his 8 years he has gone 8-10 or better so going 10-10 or 11-9 is not going on a limb by that much. I am playing the law of averages here.

Iowa will be a projected bottom feeder in the Big Ten next year so yeah I think that's going out on a limb

He may have under performed his senior year, but the team he was on won 7 more games that year than the previous year. I thought he was hurt for some of the year but I am trusting you are right and I am wrong. His roll also may have changed. He averaged 8 or so ppg, much like gesell did for his 4 year career, and those teams all made improvements.

Individually they may not have improved but the teams that they were on did. That is just my biased opinion of that is ok to use.

Nope

ISU 2017-2018 13-18 overall 4-14 in conference 0-10 in away games

Iowa 2017-2018 14-19 overall 4-14 in conference 1-10 in away games

Pretty comparable finishes IMO

I hate to take the side of a Hawkeye on this, but Iowa actually did have a slightly higher net rating per 100 adjusted for SOS last season than we did...

Both teams stunk. It was a season to forget for both of us.

I just see a more credible path forward for Iowa State to improve given the recruiting class that we are bringing in, some of the flashes last year, what we have returning and the terrible luck and timing we had on injuries last season, Shayok and Jacobson coming off their sit-out years, and Prohm's coaching record at Murray State and Iowa State in maximizing the return of a roster. Prohm has also made past "problem children" in Nader, Thomas, and Burton play way better after a year or two of tutelage compared to before he got them.

Both teams can expect improvements from their returning players. But what does Iowa have that would be comparable to our signs for hope, including...?

Returning impact guys (Weiler-Babb, Young, Talley) coming off injuries?

Returning guys who might compete for First Team All-Conference (Wigginton, Lard)?

High-major impact transfers (Shayok, Jacobson) set to have big roles?

Incoming recruits with comparable pedigrees to Horton-Tucker and Griffin?

Past examples of night-and-day improvements in players (Nader, Thomas, Burton)?

Big wins against some really good teams (Texas Tech, West Virginia) last year when all the pieces came together, which we hope to see more of next year?

They were picked to be in the middle of the pack past year. I see much of the same this year.

getting to 10-10 would be middle of the pack 6 more wins, but only 4 more teams above them. That is not hard to do. And Fran has done it before.

Fran has never had a roster this limited defensively ever before and let's face it Cook is probably gone
