Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

The biggest issue is the roster construction. Baer, Pemsl, and Nunge all played on the wing this year because Iowa has so many posts and so few guards. Those guys all need to be playing the 4 or the 5. When you have a guy like Pemsl trying to close out on other teams’ small forwards, I think it’s obvious that that’s not going to go well.

Pemsl at the "3" was one of the craziest moves I repeatedly saw last year. Like you said, he had no chance guarding a perimeter player and was worthless pump faking from 15-20 feet when he got the ball on the wing.

Man, it's just tough to see things getting much better if Cook leaves. Will be even more lacking in athleticism without Cook and even Wagner.

lets just say I have an idea of how to fix this, have one last hope of confidence that Fran can see what to fix.

Iowa needs to have Weiskamp, Dailey play the 3 exclusively to help guard opposing players.

Weiskamp will be good but not the savior.

Moss, Connor, and Bohannon with a little Dailey mixed in need to go to the next level. I am actually ready to see Connor at the point and Bohannon at the 2 with Moss coming off the bench. To me that is the best option for Iowa but will cause some problems because the coaches son, right or wrong, will be starting instead of a 2 year "starter" in Moss.

Starters without Cook would be this

PG Connor - facilitator, knows the offense, good shooter, lacks penetration and creating

SG Bohannon - scorer, takes Jok role in offense, runs off screens to get open looks, not a good creator

SF Weiskamp - creator, scorer, only a freshman and will see a learning curve

PF Pemsl? - communicator, rebounder, lacks explosion Nunge, Kreiner could also fit

C Garza - He is going to be the heart and soul.

WITHOUT COOK IOWA WILL BE LUCKY TO BE IN THE NIT, WE CANT FIRE FRAN BECAUSE OF THE BUYOUT, IF WE MAKE THE NIT IT IS ACTUALLY AN IMPROVEMENT, HE WILL BE BACK FOR 2019-2020, HE WILL BE ON THE HOT SEAT WITH PATRICK AND WHOEVER ELSE COMES WITH HIM.

(that is a very ummmmm unathletic lineup for basketball)

I like that lineup.

There were several moments last year where I'd look at the lineup and wonder "what thought process could have possibly lead to that group of individuals being on the floor together." I swear he has some kind of random lineup generator, or a standing policy that when he points to the bench in anger whoever stands up first gets to go in the game.

Prohm would never call our fans idiots or morons

I did not say he would, but Fran was not wrong, Iowa fans can be idiots because they are typically not fans of the sport when it is not doing well. Iowa football gets good and all of a sudden everyone is wearing Hawk gear yelling go hawks. It is fun to see, but the uneducated fan pisses me off as much as delusional fans. And everyone has those types too.

To put it mildly.

Don't forget he threw his assistant coaches under the bus due to not restraining him when he tried to assault a ref.

I am not disagreeing with you, I am just willing to let this ride out this next year as an Iowa fan. We are set up well for recruiting in 2019 and 2020, until we strike out on Carton and Foster.....

I mean just look at this thread. We’ve got a bunch of hok fans on an ISU message board begging us to believe that Iowa isn’t going to be bad next year. It’s like “cmon big bro look at us look. At. Us. We are just ISU in the big ten we’re the same we’re going to make the tourney just like you now watch me pretzel to make you believe me”

The problem with trying Bohannon in the Jok role is that he's 6-1 with a lowish release. Everybody will switch that screen and he's not good enough putting the ball on the floor to get himself space to get himself a shot. Jok is 6-6 with a high release so it didn't matter if they switched the screen.

Unlike a lot of people, I like Patrick's game but his game is running rim to rim and using his energy and feel to score and rebound. He's got to have guards to facilitate playing like that and he doesn't right now.

I don’t think Iowa fans are saying that in this thread.
