Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

Good grief, has anyone told him that he doesn't have to choose? He can bring in the grad transfer and keep Moss, Dailey and Connor and let them duke it out for playing time. Rumor has it that competition for playing time can actually make a team better.

Yes I agree with you, but he seems to think he is good to go there, right or wrong we wont know until Mid December unfortunately.

Yeah, competition forces players to become better. By not recruiting over your current roster, you're not trying. You certainly won't produce much better results.

It is one player. He wants someone else I get it go get him, if he does not like what he sees then why take someone that is the same level player when you already have 5? He is focusing all of his recruiting effort on 19 and 20 and I hope it works. If he does not get Carton (probably has about a 25% chance) or Terry and misses out on Locure and takes a marginal guard then I will have lost all hope. I am telling you I am hanging by a thread here. Give me a break!

No one is trying to flog you here. We just appreciate a hawk fan who is willing to talk rationally rather than trolling every other post.

He should try transfer recruiting. Generally it is a shorter process and doesn't appreciably get in the way of recruiting a regular class.

The biggest issue is the roster construction. Baer, Pemsl, and Nunge all played on the wing this year because Iowa has so many posts and so few guards. Those guys all need to be playing the 4 or the 5. When you have a guy like Pemsl trying to close out on other teams’ small forwards, I think it’s obvious that that’s not going to go well.

Agreed.

Looked like an abundance of players who essentially play the same position/style.

Its apparently not obvious to Francis.

And none of them (except Cook and Garza) are really any better than the others- Pemsl, Kreiner, Nunge, Wagner - all those guys were at the same level. Impossible to know who to play on any given night because you have no idea which one of those players is going to outplay the others. I wish a few more players would have transferred out just to make things easier for Fran.

That's the downside of having so many players get minutes.

It's going to be tough to keep all of them happy if a few take reduced minutes that are used to seeing the floor.

Iowa fans mocked us because we mocked Fran's recruiting. I miss that thread

That is a good analysis, but when I look back at some of the close games I keep thinking man just a little defensive adjustment might help. I coach basketball and us as a coaching staff are already game planning what type of defense to teach and how to teach it for next year. This is at the high school level. I just think/ HOPE (big leap of faith here) that Fran is considering the same thing.

We played ISU tight, PSU, MSU, Michigan all with upper classmen that did not want to be there (Uhl, Wagner, Ellingson) now they are gone. Does Cook want to be there? Pemsl? I am not sure what to expect with this team. The formula is there to be a really good fundamental team but Fran's history of defensive philosophy concerns me. All I got is hope.

I will admit that I was bummed when we did not go after a grad transfer harder, but I can see the side of why we didnt. At least I am trying to understand it.

It is?

As a hawk fan I just dont see how losing 1 Friggen guy in Jok can contribute to a complete collapse. I think it was upper classmen leadership that tanked along with the inability of the coaches to get it under control. We lost 1 guy in Jok, who could shoot the lights out, but then proceed to collapse on the DEFENSIVE side of the court. Jok was not a defensive player. He was average at best.

My guess is that it had something to do with chemistry, hope Fran can fix it.

I think Fran is the root of most of the chemistry problems & late season melt downs you've had.

I think Fran is the problem with the team chemistry - not the solution. Yelling at guys, playing too many guys, using dice to determine who plays with who, not having a floor leader... these are all things that kill guys confidence in themselves and each other.

I do appreciate your level-headedness with your optimism in your posts though. It's rare in these forums...
