Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

My bad, I was interpreting your original post on this topic as putting 5 guys out there that can light it up from 3 and not worry about anything else.

Kind of a fun hypothetical to think about.

Yeah, I was trying to come up with a realistic lineup, not just taking the five guys with the five best 3% on the two teams and seeing how that goes.

Shayok and Lewis are in the 6'5" or 6'6" range. They can be "bigs."

I wanted five guys who were at least acceptable shooters, and at least two very good ones in Wigginton and Bohannon, with some notional choices towards at least attempting to slow the other side down and not play five 6'4" or less guys.

That is why Ejim played in those lineups (and kept chucking despite his mediocre percentage). He was going to give you at least passable defense and rebounding.

Pretty sure Sagarin takes SOS into account when doing his rankings.
Sagarin has Iowas SOS at 51 and ISUs at 6. Defensive rankings on Kenpom have ISU about 100 spots better than Iowa. So yes, ISU played much better competition and in lower scoring games.
So comparing stats for individual players on the two teams is not all that instructive without taking that into consideration.
Considering the teams had similar seasons they should be fairly evenly represented on a hypothetical roster. But ISU did actually have a stretch when a healthy Weiler-Babb was at PG where they looked pretty good. The missed time by Weiler Babb, Young, Talley and Lard meant they didn't get much of a chance to play at full strength.

Yeah but Fran's boy the All American was out most of the year for Iowa...

I was kidding with the THT hypothetical.

I will do mine assuming everyone returns, all the signed recruits make it to campus and everyone is 100% healthy heading into the season:

G: Wigginton
G: NWB
G: Bohannon
F: Cook
F: Lard

Top 4 off the bench in no particular order would be Wieskamp, Shayok, THT and Garza.

Lard and Cook would not play well together. There's not enough space inside. Plus it's really nice to have a 4 man that can switch onto guards and I'm not sure Cook can do that. Bohannon starting has to be a joke -- defense is half the game and you can't have a good defense with him on the court. This team would be better.

G: LW
G: NWB
G: Shayok
F: THT
F: Lard

Not sure why he hasnt been able to land a great PG. I think Carton ends up in Iowa City though.

You're right about the first part although I am honestly surprised you don't think Bohannon is great since you don't care about defense

I have a feeling Shayok is going to be stretch fours' worst nightmare.

ISU have a shot with Carton in your eyes?

2019 class could be special for Iowa if they can get two Top 50 players.

Sure about that?

@CyTwins stated ISU had 6 of the top 7 players between the 2 squads last season but ISU and Iowa were similarly ranked in several metrics with Iowa being better according to Sagarin.

RPI has ISU slightly ahead of Iowa and KenPom is blocked at my work for some reason so cannot answer for them.

...and yeahbuddy's mating calls/love affairs with Sagarin and KenPom continues.
