Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

I mock anybody that uses a story from Rob Howe as a source.

Who are your go-to Hawkeye media members? Not looking to bash anyone, just curious who you like.

I admit I enjoy Gary Dolphin. Seems like a nice guy and sure he's a homer, but you want that if you're a Hawk fan.

I like both the Rivals guys, Blair Sanderson and Tom Kakert. I like most of the guys from the Gazette too, especially Morehouse.

I dont really consider Dolph an Iowa media member. All he does is call the play by play for basketball and football. He doesnt cover any pressers. And he really isnt all that good at play by play.

Kakert said he expects Cook to leave but you expect him to come back though...

Are G-League salaries rising? Last I had heard some of the players were making maybe 30k a season.

I'm not sure it's quite that low, but it's not millions like the ones on NBA contracts get. I think many players have to chose between the G-League's access to the NBA, or giving up on the NBA and going overseas to make more money. Georges and Naz are not on NBA contracts now (I don't believe) but they may not be too far from making an NBA roster next year with the way they are playing. Monte is on a two-way deal still. I would be, however, that Matt Thomas is outearning all 3 of them, but has little-to-no chance of seeing the NBA.

Honestly, if I were Cook I'd look at a guy like Deonte Burton. Deonte came back and had a real good senior year. He was flat out dominate towards the end of the year. However, he just wasn't ever going to be an NBA player with his size and skill set. So you have to sit there and wonder, do I invest another 1-2 years in college basketball, with the wear and tear on your body, or do you just say I probably never will play in the NBA so I may as well get out there and start making some money now? For alot of guys, being a solid overseas basketball player is nothing to scoff at.

Right, he said if he had to guess now that would be his guess but he has nothing concrete to go off.

You always agree with all the Clone beat writers/journalists that you like?

Youre schtick is getting more strange by the day.

I have never heard that. The main reason for him to not come back that I have read is because he hates school and may rather get paid in the D League or Europe rather than go to class.

He should put out a feeler to gauge if Roy would have any interest then.

Mods, can you create a forum for just Yeahbuddy and CyTwins? Just a forum with those two as the only two that can post on it, but yet we can all see it? The past couple of weeks has been pretty calm, but these two are back at it again. One just trying to one up the other as always.

I think many of us only look at the Draft as an NBA first round lock or back to college situation. In reality if your goal is to make good money and are open to playing oversees it is a legit option..

Playing in Spain, Greece or China, getting paid 7 digits tax free, team pays for housing and travel for ~10 years would set most people up pretty well in life. Actually could be preferable G-League bus trips or College (especially EIU) for 2 years. All depends if getting to the NBA or getting paid is the goal.

That's really rare

Exactly. It all depends on what the individuals want to do. Some might just want to be done with school and to make money for playing while they can. Others want to stay in school longer.

I also think alot of it comes down to an honest assessment of your abilities. Even if Tyler Cook comes back next year, I'm not sure his ceiling is any higher than a 2nd round pick. I don't think I've seen him on any 2018 or 2019 mock drafts. So do you spend another two years chasing an unrealistic dream, or go start making some money elsewhere?

Kakert is a good interview on KXNO. As a guy who enjoys knowing what's going on in the sports world, Kakert does a good job with reporting facts.

Actual quote from twitter:

Fran has got 5 ESPN top 100 players in the last two years. 3 on the current roster, one coming in each of the next 2 years. Questioning his coaching ability is justifiable but saying he can’t recruit is false.

Top 150 players

2018 - 1 Weiskamp
2017 - 1 Garza
2016 - 1 Cook
2015 - 0
2014 - 0

That is really bad for a P5 program
