iHeartRadio Bankruptcy

This is all you need to know..."The company has been suffering due to more than $20 billion in debt. That load, which has been crippling the entertainment giant for a decade now, is a result of a 2008 leveraged buyout "

The company still has value and will likely continue ongoing with possibly little to notice for the public. They just have to restructure that ridiculous debt.

They’ll probably trim the fat by canning the one Cyclone on their station.

I am going to picture him making this face anytime he starts talking about aliens and ghosts now.

I think both aliens and ghosts are possible until I hear C Dubs talk about them, then I wonder if I should seek help.

Don't they own like everything? How do you go bankrupt when you own a monopoly?

I wondered why some doosher said “Go Hawks” before playing the next song on the alt rock station before a CyHawk game, looked and I think they own at least 8 stations in DM. I think they own alt rock 106.3, The Bus, and the classic hip hop, can’t remember the rest.

Between them and Cumulus, they own a bulk share of the market. Coincidentally, Cumulus filed for bankruptcy 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Telecommunications Act of 1996 wrecked local radio. KFMG was a great Des Moines station that became a casualty of this law.

With streaming, podcasts, and satellite I would think the niche for local radio would be "localness". DJ's actually in the local studios programming their own music, interviewing and showcasing local artists, etc. The appeal of KXNO is the local hosts discussing Iowa sports teams.

Between 5 and 10 years ago, both I Heart Radio and Cumulus accumulated a boatload of debt buying up local radio stations and other broadcast companies. Neither anticipated the rather drastic downturn in revenue due to people turning to online streaming. They have the same problem that many newspapers, magazines, cable companies, etc. have but most of those others don't have the debt to deal with that IHeart and Cumulus have.

Hope basic operations remain the same. I started using iheart.com to stream KNBR at work because their own website was somewhat... unreliable at times. I'd hate to not be able to get a consistent feed from the station one way or another, especially during baseball season.

If I remember right Alt 106.3 used to have a little sign where the ribbon board is at JTS now. Also used to (maybe they still do?) broadcast the football games, I think.

KFMG was great.

We have a similar local channel in KC that is an NPR affiliate that does everything you mentioned. It's also commercial free, but I just don't think Des Moines is a big enough market to support a comparable station.

On the radio side it could be hard to keep listeners when you play 5 mins of crappy music followed by 10 min of commercials, many of them the same. Looking at the DSM market there seems to be some mismanagement.

For me I can listen to streaming music all day, basically ad free and hear a huge variety of music and rarely the same song, or I can listen to podcasts to mix it up a little. There are times when I listen 12-16 hours a day.
