All this will proudly be talked about until the actual season starts and they slide back into mediocracy.
I could see a spin where they say he wasn't a good defender and that's what they need to improve on so they won't miss him
I'm sure some will say that. Either way, losing Cook basically takes them out of the NCAA tourney next year again.
Why I think Fran prefers he transfers. He's not getting fired with that buyout. Have a couple crappy years so when the contract gets into buyout possibility. He can win a couple NIT games and rabble rouse the AD to extend him with hope for he future.
Are they even in the NCAA talk for next year in any case?
Currently Fran returns the same team that finished 13th in a Big 10 that is at an all time low. And it isn't like they were even competitive in many of those match-ups (20 pt down in almost every away game). The NIT should be their fans hope.
They SHOULD be better next year by default, but I guess it depends what else the Big Ten brings back/brings in on other teams.
If I was Cook and was transferring, I wouldn't go to Missouri that's for sure. Find some place that actually has a good coach. I saw Missouri's top two guard recruits from last year are already transferring.
It seems most of the other big 10 teams are bringing back a lot as well.

After looking this is very true, although MSU, Michigan & OSU look like they could lose some players to the NBA draft and Purdue loses a ton to graduation. MSU reloads with five 4-star recruits, while Michigan reloads with four 4-stars. Purdue and OSU both bring in two 4-stars.
Every other team brings back at least 5 of their top 7 players, except for NW who brings back four but also brings in three 4-stars.
Of course these numbers don't include who else may transfer or go pro.
Who was the other guard that transferred? I only see Blake Harris from last years class, and didn't think he was much of a surprise because he came there (essentially) solely because of Michael Porter. And the way Martin was treating him, or as it's been reported, it wasn't much of a surprise that Harris wanted a new home.

Cook's defense must be a mental thing, cus the guy certainly has the physical ability to be a good defender.
