Feb 5th - 6th Weather Thread

I was on 1st St coming from the diagonal this afternoon and it was by far the worst stretch of my 3 hour commute home today. I was driving through 8-12 inch drifts pretty well the whole stretch. The westbound lane was completely snowed on over. It surprised me when I got into Ankeny and not much had been touched yet at 2:00 or so.

This was at 5:30-6:00ish for me.

A couple times I was legitimately worried I was going to get my car stuck in the middle of the road.

Yeah... i was just out around oralabor\delaware. its still not great.

I moved to ankeny from WDM in early 2016, so we've not had any 'real' snow yet like this since i moved here. WDM gets stuff clear so fast i may have been spoiled.

It's been about 13 years since I lived in Ankeny, but I don't remember ever thinking they were in a great hurry to clear off.

Right at 4" in CR. As of about an hour and a half ago it didn't appear as though they were making much of attempt to get things cleared off.

We were out by Target and Home Depot around 7 tonight and it was still pretty bad. We live on a fairly untraveled side street in NW Ankeny and it was far cleaner than any of the main roads on our way out and home. We even watched them clean the cul de sac behind us before we left the house. Maybe they just assume there’s enough traffic on the main roads to clean themselves off?

That could be. My street in the neighborhood southeast of the theater was mostly clear by 5pm or so (got there perfectly on time to dump on me right as i got my snowblower to the end of the driveway), i was surprised to go from decent neighborhood roads to bad main roads.

The plow dumped a mound of snow the end of our driveway as soon as I got inside from snowblowing the driveway, of course. Luckily, the neighbor must have cleaned it off while we were gone as repayment for doing their sidewalk.

The other neighbors left me another half gallon of OJ by our front door for doing theirs. :D

I’m not sure what is up with the city of Des Moines, but there snow removal has been nonexistent so far this year. Today was a tough one, but still, it was disappointing how awful the main roads were at 4:00. My 15 minute and 7 mile commute took nearly an hour. I didn’t see a plow once all day.

Maybe it's because you don't have Bill any more?

Who is this Bill that you speak of?
How quickly they forget.

EVERY time there was a report on plowing or winter road prep/clearing in Des Moines, Bill Stowe of the Glorious Mane was the man who talked about it on TV. It usually elicited shouts of "Hi, Bill!" at the TV. Everyone loved Bill.
Alas, he has moved on to run the Des Moines Waterworks now...and is less beloved.

Am I a bad person for wishing the person that passed me on the interstate going 70 would end up in a ditch?
