Being a millionaire today doesn't nearly mean what it did when I was a kid. Today, without a pension, you need to have a million or more saved up before retiring if you want any kind of life after retiring.

I can tell you that the last 5 years or so mine has went up a lot and I'm not doing anything different. Great market conditions and getting older helps that out a lot. On the down side, with the market being down 1.5% today I've probably lost the equivalent of my wages from the first year I went to work just today.

Yeah, $1M is really conservative, especially if you live until you're 90 or so. My current target is $3 million for retirement. I want to have enough to live comfortably and travel plus have enough on hand in the event of health issues. And if things go well, I'd love to pass along some to my daughter. I'm not counting on crap from SS.
