NFL: Alex Smith Traded to Washington

Washington shipped CB Kendall Fuller (PFF's top rated Redskin, 90.1) and a 3rd round pick last night for Alex Smith. Washington then gave him a 4 year extension (he had 1 left) and 71 million GUARANTEED!

As a Chiefs fan I like the move, cleared up cap space, got some much needed help in the defensive backfield for Marcus Peters and it opened the door for Patty Mahomes.

Thing I don't get is that Washington didn't want to pay Cousins, so they traded for an older quarterback and gave him more years and money, while giving up their best young defensive player. Dan Snyder makes no sense at all.

Counsins will end up getting more that Smith on the market and the Redskins will be compensated back with a third round pick from whoever signs Counsins, I believe. So essentially they saved a little cash and got rid of their stud corner. Horrible move for Washington.

Sort of. There's no guarantee that they'll get a compensatory pick, and if they do, it won't be from the team that lands Cousins. They'll just get an extra pick. The exact formula for awarding compensatory picks isn't known outside of the league office, but it's based on things like playing time and post season awards among other things. They look at the number of snaps that the players you gained and lost in free agency, and throw it into the formula. Of you lose more plays than you gained, then you might get a pick. If you gained more than you lost, you might not. That's very simplified, and playing time is not the only factor at all. The highest a compensatory pick can be is 3rd round, and it's not given up by another team. It's simply added to the draft. That's why there are more than 32 picks per round once you get to the 3rd round.

Can't believe that Cousins will be 30 this summer. Maybe someone like Denver or Buffalo makes a run at him.

I think Cousins made it pretty plain that he didn't really want to resign with Washington. I think they offered him a pretty good deal last year and he elected to just play it out and hit the open market. He'll get paid of course, but it will be interesting to see who does the paying.

I think KC has seen enough of Alex Smith to know what he has to offer. It's either make a move now, when he's worth something, or let him walk after this next season.
I think they like what they see from Mahomes and if that doesn't work out, the next move is to say goodbye to the Kool aid Man.

He had a year left on his contract, and there was no way in hell the Chiefs were going to resign him after next year with the investment they put into Mahomes. So yes, its a good move to free up cap space, get one of the best corners in the league, and get an extra draft pick in lieu of letting Mahomes sit on the bench for another year.

Yeah I heard on the radio this AM that the Redskins would be getting a pick back when Counsins signs, but admittedly had no idea how it worked out.

Yeah I'm firmly in the group that thinks KC won the trade.
Minny probably keeps 1 of those QBs, if Bradford or Keenum is let go, either one could work as a back up option for Mahomes.

I have heard that they may bring back Chase Daniels since he knows Andy's system to work with Mahomes. I wouldn't mind that, but I would like a back-up with more game experience who can come in if needed.

At least the chiefs are finally doing ****. Drafting Mahomes, now making a pretty large trade to put him in the drivers seat for the future? And getting a good corner to boot?

Hell, maybe their front office does give a damn.

I like Mahomes however, my brother did send me a text reminding me that the Iowa State team that won like 3 games held him without a touchdown. haha

Have you seen some of the hires other teams have made? Do you remember how bad the coaches in KC were before Reid showed up? I'm happy with Reid.

Sure he hasn't done much in the playoffs in KC but his teams always get wrecked by injuries. Look at the IR for the Chiefs going into the Titans game then add Travis Kelce to that list. Can't win every game missing that many pieces.
