MLB: Goodbye to Chief Wahoo

I'm with you, I don't get the big fuss about it (except maybe Redskins), but if people are offended I guess do it.

Only a matter of time until PETA gets involved with animal mascots.
Indians is offensive to some. Cowboys with guns(OSU) is offensive to some. Let's just get plain/simple names and go from there.

I remember when the Washington Bullets was an NBA team and they removed the name because DC had significant crime issues and bullets promoted violence.

You'd probably be better off starting fresh than rehashing probably the worst professional team of all time... but I guess it is Cleveland, so maybe they embrace it.

Baseball is all about traditional and lore. I am completely for naming teams after stories like this one, which is hilarious in many ways...

Better than an approximately century-long racial slur. We'll always have Major League.

Like you said, you are Cleveland. You are all about owning it and redemption.

In that same vein, I was hoping they would have named the Washington Nationals the Washington Grays after the Negro League team.

But no, that was just too classy for them.

The Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns are offensive to those who have suffered from heat stroke or skin cancer. The San Diego Padres are offensive to those without fathers and exlude children from same sex female marriages.

Well there is the religious aspect of the whole "Padre" and the Friar.

You joke, but this will come up sometime in the next 10 years

I understand that people are sick of having to be "PC" all the time, but does it really hurt anyone to not officially endorse a logo that is a caricature of Native American stereotypes? No one is going to force you to burn your Yahoo merchandise and the team has been using the 'C' for a while now.

While making an uproar about offending Native Americans seems like a big deal about not much, freaking out about having to change a logo is an even bigger deal about even less.

If I was a hardcore Indians fan I might be a little sad that something I've enjoyed since childhood is being change, but it doesn't change your memories and it shouldn't really affect you that much.

Does it really hurt anyone to be a little more considerate about what we think is ok to do? Even if there's not a huge outrage from the Native American people that still exist, why does that make it a perfectly ok thing to do?

Racist caricatures and racial slurs ("Redskins") against peoples that are far too often not even around to defend themselves anymore need to go in 2018.

This is not about PC. This is about wrong and right.

I have no problem with Native American names or iconography if it is respectful and positive or, better yet, endorsed by the relevant tribes. You are never going to see me calling for the Florida State Seminoles to be known as something else.

Chief Wahoo was and is way over the line, though.

Keeping "Indians" is okay by me, but I would rather just they pick a new name and turn the page on that chapter in their history. They are not leaving much behind.

I have a special soft spot for these First Nations peoples.

One can make a case they got an even worse draw than did African slaves. The material conditions of their lives, the few that are left, are also in a really bad place.

I agree. I don't see any real reasons to keep "Redskins" around. Just because casual racism is accepted, doesn't mean it's right and should be kept around for traditions sake? No. The sad thing is that there are so few Native Americans around to actually be able to get offended by these things. Lets not act like it's ok regardless.

Endorsed because the Seminole tribe got paid.

We might as well have team names like the New York Kikes if Redskins is okay.

Your point being...?

Their name is their property.

The can monetize it how they please.

I saw this logo on r/mlb and think it is a good option for the team to adopt.

Agreed, although it seems like there will always be room for interpretation to whether or not something is being honored or if something is racist. If it's a judgment call, I'm ok with erring on the side of caution and removing/replacing it. It's not like there are not other options to name a sports team.

I find it more funny that people are upset about the elimination of some cartoon mascot enough to argue with the people that are calling it racist. It's not like people are just arbitrarily picking a random mascot to change. There's a reason it's upsetting to people.

I'm definitely not a "if one person is offended, change it" type of guy (no one has the right to not be offended) but I'm not sure it makes it okay if a simple majority is fine with it either. The answer is really at some undefined point in between, and since I'm not Native American, I don't feel like the best judge of where it lies. I do think that the Cleveland logo is way past your average point of offensive.

I wonder when enough time passes and cultures are very much mixed (hundreds of years or more) if the PC culture will go away. Hardly anyone would be a 100% anything and I'd feel like you wouldn't be offended by culturally exaggerated cartoons/mascots. Or we'll be so PC that no one will communicate in fear of offending the nearest robot.
