Official Post-Game Thread - ISU vs. SDSU

I partially agree with you, but after Bates shook off the initial butterflies, he was pretty darn good. That pass to Sed, the runs he broke off, etc. He has the ability to change a game with his legs.

I agree that AA provides more poise and better passing at this point, but there will be times this year when we don't need steadiness, we will need someone to come in and make something happen.

In any case, I think we're definitely going to see both QBs next week again, and hopefully more passing down the field (and passing in general). I don't remember seeing us pass the ball over the middle much, except for the TD to Darks.

I felt that Arnaud managed the offense better. Bates did look crazy athletic, and I agree it would be great to get him on the field somewhere. It seemed that Arnaud was the better leader, but I don't think he distanced himself enough to put the discussion to rest. I look forward to seeing both of them again next week.

Some thoughts.

Perhaps the hardest hitting ISU team I can recall in the last 18 years.

AA is poised...and should lead this team for now.

I was very proud of the student section....very impressive from my spot on the west side.

New logo/Uni's/stadium renovations were very classy/big time.

Leonard Johnson is going to be a player.

The attitude/swagger is something I have not seen in a long time/goes with point 1.

So has nobody else yet mentioned it... the Clones are currently at the top of the Big 12 rankings! All anybody else can do is tie our record on Saturday! Let's relish this moment...

And I cant believe everyone is still stuck on Arnaud, Yeah he plays good back there, But every time Phil took off with the ball it was an easy 7+ yards

Good post all told, but I can't believe how you are contradicting yourself. First, you point out that this wasn't a team that should be hanging with a Big XII team. Then you point out that Phillip should be the quarterback because he ran so well against them. Not terribly consistent logic there.

Taking off and running for good yards will not be so consistently easy against quality Big XII defenses--or Iowa, for that matter.

On a larger note, yes, they "should have" done better. But unlike certain Greek and Roman gods, people (and football teams) do not burst forth from the womb fully formed. It takes some time to find your feet, and there will be some growing pains. However, progress is clearly being made, and I suspect that some guys are being sternly reminded of certain basics in the film room today.

While the game "sounded" kind of sloppy, a few things stood out:

First, we got the ball first, and punched it the heck in the endzone. I can't remember the last time we did that, even against "sisters of the poor" university.

Second, no procedure penalties. In fact, the only holding penalty was the one that nullified PB's TD.

Third, Jason Harris' big run.

I'm still concerned about the D-Line, but I get the "feeling" that this will be a good team. Especially with more experience under their belt.

Edited to add: And, yes, I did okay in my 10K this morning, though the first mile sucked, hard. The difference between running as a 20-something and a 40-something is that as a 20-something, I always felt better at the start than the end, while as a 40-something, I feel better at the end.

Next morning thoughts:

The two quarterback scheme could work in our favor. We have two very capable guys. This means we can react to teams once we get wind of what their game plan is for that game. If they have us covered in the secondary, we can throw Bates in and get him scrambling, or if their line is tough, we get AA in to toss it down field.

The new uniforms look tough. USC clone nonetheless, but still great to see.

The personal fouls were a bit much. Some were garbage calls, but I chalk it up to the guys being tired of hitting each other and excited to hit a different colored jersey.

I want to see more from the receiving core. In my mind, we still don't have a stand out wide out outside of Sumrall. I thought that Alexander Robinson (PLEASE, no A-Robs) looked good. He's a HARD runner and is a much better weapon that we haven't had at running back for some time. Robinson next to Scales makes Jason look like a clear second stringer.

Defense was solid. I think that it was a tale of two teams in the first and second half. I think we came out a bit soft after halftime and let them start marching all over the field. It was great though to see them bail us out with the INTs.

We had some beasts, we had some weak links and there is a lot to clean up before we start playing formidable opponents like Kent and Iowa. I will reserve my overall judgement on the team until after the Kent State game.

Good start though!

I thought Bates was pretty impressive (for his first game at QB, remember AA got to play a lot last year). That throw to SJ for the td, was nice. He is electric, give him a few more weeks to get used to playing in front of 50K people and i think you will see a better QB. Bates is going to be special. I also thought AA managed the game very well.

Jason Scales, what can I say he is Jason Scales and is the same back from last year. Bass needs to get into game shape and take over that #2 spot or they need to give it to Harris.

The defense looked great, i think they only gave up a couple 1st downs in the 1st half. They had 200+ return yds on int's (they were better at moving the ball than our running game). I hope Banks is ok to come back, because the depth of our secondary is great and they will all be needed when ISU faces Texas Tech in teh Big 12 championship game .

excited for next week.

Let's give some credit to SJ for that catch too. The pass was great, bet the catch was excellent with a defender all over him. SJ is going to be a very special player.

Some interesting comments in the Rag this morning from the SDSU head coach. States he was very impressed with our ability to 'strike' (hard hitting) in the open field. This is something I noticed as well and have not seen from an ISU team in many, many years.

Also....it was the first time since 1989 we did not have a punt!!

I think we can think of somethin better than \"Boney Mahoney\"...heck, you dont even gotta use his name...Das Boot? I guess when Chiz likes somethin he says \"thats salty\", he called Mahoney \"salty\" tonight. Anyone who saw his \"Crank Dat Lion King\" video that he promptly removed from youtube knows the kid can move...we gotta have somethin better than Boney though.

All names aside, the kid was phenomenal! Anyone else think a few of those FG's had another 10-20 yards behind them after they crossed the uprights? And how about that kickoff that got pushed back...still gets it to the goal line with mega hangtime! lets hope he stays consistent!

There does have to be a better nickname - it just struck me how incredibly thin he was the first time he lined up for a kick, so I decided to go with Boney.

Like you said - the guy drilled it in reliably, which is all we can ask!! Wasn't he only a 1- or 2-star recruit? I'll take a low recruit like this anyday!

Watching on the tele, what struck me right away was how excited our guys were when they took the field. When Arnaud came to the huddle before the first play, he was electrified and doing his best to pump the other guys up. That first offensive series was immense fun to watch. Collin Franklin made a NICE grab on that play. Very glad they punched it in for 6.

It was great to see Mahoney make the easy kicks. Haven't really had the luxury for awhile.

And the defense... goodness. They gave up some yards and looked a bit loose at times, but they sure were hitting. Jesse Smith is a monster. And all the picks were shocking. Yes, it was against South Dakota State, but it was still a special performance. The guys definitely gotta tighten those screws, though, because the D is not going to get 5 picks, 200 return yards, and a TD every game to bail them out of the red zone.

The white shoes looked great. Let's end that debate right now.

Mostly, just glad to have football back!

P.S. Baylor looked pretty terrible in their opener.

To the Bates handoff discussion, I dont know if this is what you are referring to, but the handoffs that looked weird were part of the option that he ran a few times, he can either hand it to the back or pull it back himself depending on the defense' reaction. Ideally the more you make it look like the back has it, the better, which is what he was trying to do a little much. His first run went for 11 yards, and they were hard fought, (Yes it was SDSU, and Yes big 10 and big 12 defenses will be tougher for him to run on, But he has it in him, he is one of the fastest guys on the team)

One of those was busted... he turned to the outside, and I think it was Scales was to the inside.
