Allen Lazard- NFL Draft

4.65 is right about what I think he'll run, however yes most guys get slower in college.

I would wager the 40’s measured at the NFL combine are extremely more accurate & less subject to manipulations than any 40 time at any HS camp anywhere.

Football players get slower? Unless you don’t allow them to recuperate from the toll a season puts on them, I don’t think that is the case. Some HS athletes change positions & put on more weight to do so. Yeah, that could make one slower. An OL showing a 40 of 4.75 in HS then runs 5.3 in combine or college? That HS 40 was bogus, unless during that time he had a major injury.

Typically you add .26 to hand times.
Correct when converting hand times to fully automatic times. But the NFL combine doesn’t use FAT, they use a hybrid hand time and electronic. Their starts are started by hand (where most time is gained due to delayed reaction) and the finish is electronic. The person starting the clock at the combine is going to be a lot more accurate than some HS coach standing 40 yards away, but still not as fast as a computer.

I’m basically splitting hairs at this point, but thought I would clarify that the combine doesn’t use FAT, but rather its started by hand with an electronic finish.

I don't get Allen as a top pick. His hype reminds me of Roethlesberger's hype at Miami OH but watching several of both of their games in and out of conference his college performance didn't ever seem to match Big Ben's.

I'm sure I'm wrong and he'll be the next pro bowl QB, but I can't honesty say the guy amazes me. Iowa didn't exactly terrorize him in the backfield and he did not look great.

His lack of accuracy would scare the hell out of me if I was a GM looking at quarterbacks. Huge arm and the measurables are good but if he can't consistently put the ball on the money then none of that other stuff matters much. The throwing windows are only going to get smaller in the NFL.

But keep in mind there are HS OL that leave school at 270-280 and are 300-330 by the time they leave college. Thirty to fifty pounds is going to slow down most kids even if they are in a great S&C program.

Just turned on the practice to see him catch another corner fade for a TD. They have Lincoln Riley in the both and asked him what ISU did in the second half to slow them down. Another good TD catch by Lazard. And now a 3rd TD catch from Baker to Lazard and that was very good catch.

This is what my thoughts on Allen have been since last year. You see the drops and it makes you shake your head, then 2 plays later he goes over a 6'2 DB for a catch he has no business making. People will be willing to look past his drops if he can prove speed and separation (like said many times on here). I don't think Allen wants to go the TE route, and I don't think he NEEDS to. But I do think it is something he should keep a door open for, just in case he sees himself slipping in peoples mock's for whatever reason, because he does have the size and blocking ability to be formidable.

Even in high school this has been what he’s done.

  • Iowa State wideout Allen Lazard was the most impressive player -- for either team -- on Thursday. He made an outstanding back-shoulder catch for a touchdown early in the session and finished with three more dazzling displays of his high-pointing ability. He also created separation on a dig route in team work and was found by Baker Mayfield. In the red zone, he also made a tough grab on a slant against tight coverage. Lazard has a fun combination of size, leaping ability, strong hands, and deceptive athleticism.
