Hip Dysplasia in Puppy

Our 11 month old 70 pound lab/pit/mutt has been limping for the past week or so and after bringing him to the vet today we learned that he has hip dysplasia. Wondering if anyone has been through the same thing with a young dog, treatment experiences, quality of life going forward, etc...

Without knowing all the details it's hard to say but did your Vet mention possibly doing a FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery? It's pretty common place procedure and dogs usually respond pretty well to it. Especially a dog as young as yours.


FHO

FHO surgery can be performed on young and mature dogs. The surgery involves cutting off the femoral head, or "ball," of the hip joint, which results in the body creating a “false” joint that reduces the discomfort associated with hip dysplasia. FHO does not recreate normal hip function, but it can be a successful pain management strategy

We have a dog that was diagnosed with the same thing a few years ago. Short of surgery, our vet suggested trying a glucosamine supplement (you can buy this in a meaty treat form) and we immediately tried it. She hasn't had any issues since. She is now 10 years old.

First thing I'd do is take the pup in to another vet for a second opinion. Not saying the first diagnosis was wrong, but with something this serious it's worth being sure. And these things do get misdiagnosed.

I would second this. Your dog's signalment fits, but obtaining a confirmed diagnosis is the first step. The ideal next step is consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. Radiographs are often taken (if they haven't already). Once confirmed, they can then go over various options (both surgical including the aforementioned FHO, and medical).
