Voices from Memphis: 2017 Bowl Edition

All in all a good experience.

Evidently at the parade as the tiger came out, a few of them told my buddies that we should be scared of the tiger, and "how scary it would be" if it got out and attacked Iowa State fans. Evidently the tiger is intelligent enough to separate Memphis fans from the opponents.

All in all - was not impressed with the intelligence of the people, but I thought they were nice.

You are knocking on Mississippi's doorstep, what did you think?

Just got back from Memphis.... I know the location was not ideal for some people, but it is awfully fun to have so many Iowa State fans in one fairly small location. That wouldn't happen in a bigger city or a place like Orlando,,,,

I hope we have a chance to see what an Orlando bowl would be like next year. As far as bigger cities go, I thought our two trips to Phoenix were fun (and warm).

My take on Memphis fans: 90% great people, 10% hillbillies. I had several very nice encounters with Memphis fans, both before and after the game. They were appreciative of how many of us had come to Memphis and wished us luck before the game and congratulated us after. However, as with any group, there are a handful that were not quite as gracious.

I was in Section 109, and there was one guy who got particularly riled up about the roughing the passer that cost them the interception. He tossed together quite the string of profanities about them not showing a replay on the video board. So much so a few families got up and moved.

Also had one Memphis fan ask me who was tending to my cornfield while I was gone.

It rained during the whole Orlando bowl yesterday and they do get a lot of rain.

I saw that and felt bad for those fans traveling so far to sit in the rain. Okie St. fans had a better day. I hope we have the chance to roll the dice.

I am sure that everyone will talk about the Bar-b-Que, only had some at The Pig on Beale, and the ribs were okay, chicken was below par and pulled pork was the highlight....
But beyond bar-b-que, found some interesting stuff around Memphis, we got a reservation Friday night for a restaurant I looked into called Flight, this place is a foodie lovers paradise. The concept is great, the food was amazing, and atmosphere was spot on. This was a top-5 restaurant I have ever went to. So back to the concept, they do entrees with the name in mind in flights, so you can have 3 different smaller entrees. Every piece of food we had was amazing, great bourbon/drank selection everything was spot on.....
Prior to that we hit the usual spots Silky's, Alfreds, we did find a good low key place called Absinthe Room, later on that night did multiple bar hops....
Game day was fun, cold and Liberty bowl stadium is just so unprepared... both leaving and arriving at parking took way longer that it should have, the restroom situation was also a joke..... After the cold game and lack of sleep the first night, the post game celebration was not as late as I would have liked.... The next day we did a few random local things, watched the duck march, got the tour of the new Old Domick distillery, ate some Gus's Chicken, than ventured back to the Bass Pro. Ended up at Westin restarant for dinner that night and out around the hotel, honestly new years eve on beale was a joke, ridiculous temps and lines to enter beale as well as get into each bar.....

Everybody that we came across was very nice and welcoming. They were definitely blown away by how many of us there were. I had multiple workers at the bar comment at how much we drink but even so we are still nice as can be.

When we stopped on the way Friday morning somewhere in Missouri, it was clear as day ISU fans had come through. It was 10:00 AM and there was no Busch Light left. Luckily for us a Bud truck was there and the guy grabbed cases right off the truck for us.

They would be fun, but different. I just think it is so great and unique to be sourounded by Iowa State fans and that wouldn’t happen in Orlando.

I thinkssn Antonio would be similar to Memphis.

I almost forgot about the other Tiger fan in front of us that kept turning around and kept telling us to waive our wand because we were gryffindor which I believe to be a Harry Potter reference.

Uh.... wow! Wait. Does that make them Ravenclaw? Hmm, go figure. Unexpected Hogwarts.

Just got back last night. Decided to stay for New Years and am glad I did, gave us the whole day to explore the city and do things we didn’t have time for on Friday/Saturday (Graceland, Bass Pro, Central BBQ, etc).

Had way more fun this time than in 2012. There was a lot to like, specifically the game atmosphere, Beale St, the local hospitality and the food. My biggest complaint overall is it still seemed Memphis was not prepared for the sheer amount of people that were there. Made it harder to eat at restaurants, explore different bars on Beale, get around town with Uber/Lyft, etc. There were several times where we went somewhere and had to leave/make new plans because it was just way too busy. Overall had a great time though and winning the actual game made things that much sweeter.
