Campbell's impact on Big 12 is profound

He and his staff have created the kryptonite for the standard Big 12 fast break spread offenses. His "double cloud" (i.e., 3-man front/8-man zone) defense has dumbfounded the most explosive offenses in the Big 12.

You can bet the rest of the conference is studying ISU video closely. My guess is that you'll soon see ISU's scheme copied all over the conference and all over the country.

Campbell and his staff will fundamentally change the way Big 12 football is played in years to come.

It's nice to see us execute the gameplan Pollard envisioned when he hired Campbell. Offenses will adjust and it takes a couple of studs on the defensive line to pull off, but we look set there for a couple of years. Lima, Johnson, and Bailey all being sophomores is exciting.

It all starts up front with the DL. ISU might not have the best guys in the country, but they are pretty darn good and relentless at putting pressure on the OL to contain them instead of beating on our LBers. Teams that really commit to the run are going to force ISU into a 4 man front most of the time. It is a good thing that Campbell has recruiting a lot of DL that can play.

KSU will be a real challenge for the ISU defense because they will want to run and take the short passes that other teams get frustrated with because they take too many plays to score on.

Baldinger gave a name to it, but we fans have had the pleasure of seeing it since Akron. It will be interesting if the success in the win-loss column continues if this actually popularizes as a concept. How many of our wins are actually the product of schematic advantage that other teams can copy?
But I want to say that if other teams in the league could pull it off, they would. WVU pulled it against us with some success. TCU's great defense is a system they stick with. Texas's defense is great, but I think they choose a four man front because they want to maximize pressure and they trust their athletes on the back-end.
The more I think about it, the less revolutionary it probably is. What is unusual is how well Iowa State executes it. And we can hope that THAT is sustainable.

It's already copied and mentioned on TV yesterday and today.
 
Doesn't Pinkle run it?

It's not new, just really hard to execute. Takes a lot of discipline, and a quality DL. That being said I wouldn't be surprised to see some more teams attempt it. Can't ignore how much success ISU is having with it.

Of course he didn't invent the 3-3-5. Many teams use this in a prevent defense when they're nursing a lead late in the game. But Campbell is using it as a base defense in the Big 12, which is revolutionary (in the sense that no other team has been doing this). And it's been incredibly effective in the way he has administered it.

Other teams are taking notice, and soon those teams will change their offensive scheme, which is why I say Campbell is having a profound effect.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure it was TCU that was the innovator of the base dime defense in this league.

1. The 3-3-5 adjusted very well to (what I assume was) a 4-2-5 against WVU when they were shredding the 3-man front.

2. This 3-3-5 is going to be even better when we have 3 linemen that have been built under Campbell's system. I was going to include a MLB as well, but what Lanning lacks in being a natural MLB (like intangibles that come with years of playing the position) he makes up for in leadership and is a great spy because he thinks like a QB - he knows what the QB is going to do before the QB does it.

It is scary that the expectations for next year is going to be through the roof. What will fans demand!!!!

I think fans have to be realistic about next year. ISU has had a lot of things go right this year along the way. Not taking anything away from the amazing play of these guys, but things have fallen ISUs way a lot this year. Zeb played pretty well yesterday, but he also threw two passes that should have been intercepted, one that potentially could have been a pick 6.

In addition, there is a lot of talent coming back next year, but a lot of the leaders will be gone. You have to be very impressed with how the senior class has lead the charge this year. Who besides DM will be a leader in 2018?

That’s the case for almost every QB. Low risk Kempt would have a couple every game. College db’s are db’s for a reason
