Reasons for Optimism (or, Don't Burn Your Tickets Yet)

Honestly there is no reason to be this bad even in a rebuilding year. We've had a terrific run of NCAA appearances and B12 tourney titles and even the real blue bloods of college basketball are permitted to miss the tourney once every ten years or so. But that's not what this is. The is getting waxed by the 3rd or 4th best team in Wisconsin by double digits at home. What's even more concerning is there doesn't appear to be a quick fix. It's not like we are starting a bunch of freshman who are going to improve dramatically over the course of this year, or even into next. This has all the look of a total overhaul and a 3 year rebuild which doesn't happen when you have competent leadership at an established basketball program.

What's that? We have 2 returning upper classmen? And 2 other transfers in that are upperclassmen? And 3 of the other 4 that have played are either freshman or missed basically all of last season? And our coaches have coached the teams the past two years to improve as the season went on, even with them being veteran teams? Yeah, why would we expect the team to improve by any reasonable margin at all?

I'll give you that Jackson is who he is at his point but I'd bet his performance's improves. Lord knows they can't get much worse.
Beverly was solid last night but I would still expect improvement as he gets more comfortable playing with the other guys.
Talley looks explosive when he wants to be and just needs time to gel with the rest of the squad.
Weiler-Babb should improve with more playing time. We have seen flashes from him. Just needs to put together a complete game.
Young is still only a sophomore and should continue improving. I think he's being asked to do a little more this year and might take some time to grow into that role.
Long is a Sophomore playing his first real minutes in a year - he should improve.
Wigginton is a freshman and things will slow down for him as the year goes on and he will get better.
Lewis is also a freshman and things will slow down for him as well and he will improve as the year goes on.

I can tell you that for right or wrong things changed when JP reseated Hilton during the Premium Hoiberg years and forced many of us to donate $3-$5K to keep our seats in the Upper Level.

He did it under the guise that we needed it for "full cost of attendance" and to keep Fred.
Then after Fred we go out and get a discount mid-major coach.

When you ask fans to spend that type of money I think we can be upset for losing to a bottom feeder Horizon squad with a new head coach by 18 at home.

It is only the worse loss to a non-conference team in 43 years at home. But once again I'm the bad fan because I actually care.

How many of the sunshine pumpers are paying $199 for season tickets with no donation? It must be nice to be a great fan with no financial investment in the program.

Some good points about the increase in tickets.

If only Prohm had bothered recruiting the last two years.

I donate a good chunk of change where I would certainly get pretty good seats, but I live in LA, do not have a chance to go to games, I do so because I want ISU to be able to compete, with other programs. I do not get any perks in return, other than support for the school, that gave me a great life as a result of getting an education there.

Its $199 for season tickets? Its that cheap? Wanna know what I pay for my season tickets to a professional sports team, a team which did not win a cup the first 20 years I owned tickets, made the playoffs like 3 times in those 20 years?

Campbell was right, too many people caught up in the instant gratification.
It was bad last night no doubt, really bad. But I am at least willing to give it time, and not overreact to a couple of games. If we get into Jan. and this team is not at least competitive I will question things right along with you.

I certainly believe Prohm benefitted from what amounted to a coach on the floor for his first 2 years.

So you might be right he is actually a horrible coach, but nobody can make that determination after a couple of games neither you nor I.

I don't think Lewis will give the team much this year. He looks like a year away from being able to be a solid bench guy. I think the spots for optimism are Wigginton, Weiler-Babb, Talley and let's see what Lard and Brase can do.

I've seen way too many brilliant in-game adjustments made the past couple years to think Prohm is a hack coach. Also, the media has really hyped his recruiting classes, thus far. IMO he's been dealing a bit with attitude adjustments in a couple of his players, so we haven't been seeing the real team yet. I didn't think they would be world beaters this season, but am still hopeful. There are still, what, 30 games left?

-Jackson needs to play better. He can, but he does need help to reach his potential.
-Beverly will is not a B12 starter level talent, never will be. Serviceable reserve is his ceiling.
-Talley is probably the key to success this year, out of the players we've seen. I expect he'll be one of the most (maybe the most) improved player.
-Weiler-Babb; I fear we've seen what he is, I am not convinced he'll be the guy we need him to be (see Jarrod Uthoff)
-Young is a role player, agree with you here. Don't expect him to ever be a 1st or 2nd team all Big 12 though
-Wigginton; Agree. He may not be the guy we need him to be until very late in the season. Hopefully he doesn't get overloaded with the pressure on him.
-Lewis; The staff is not putting much pressure on him yet, this may bode well for him later in the season. Too much unknown right now, but he has the tools to be an impact player.
-Lard and Brase; the mystery men.
-(edit); forgot about Long; I don't see it in him. Maybe* if he fixes his shot he'll be a contributor.

All this in terms B12 caliber players

The way that I was imagining his role this year would be as a spot up shooter for guys to kick out to, or to just hold their defender from helping down. There's been so little in the way of effective movement that nothing is working the way it should. Once they get the basics down, we'll see.

You are totally confusing talent with execution. I've seen far less talented teams play and win. In fact, Milwaukee is a recent example. They knew what they were trying to do, and they did it. That's the point that we need to get to.

I just don't see it. I like what I've seen from Wigginton and Lewis actually, you can tell they're talented just not experienced. As it stands though I don't know who I'd tab for even HM All Big 12.

Right now we're OU last year without Woodard. They went 11-20. That's probably what we're looking at.

We played 8 guys last night (only 7 got double digit min), 3 of which are pretty much as developed as who they are going to be. I think we all agree both Wiggington and Young are going to be solid going forward but the other two young players contributes 6 points and one rebound.

It would be one thing if we had a lot young players pushing for playing time but that doesn't seem to be the case. The worst thing you can be in basketball is experienced (elegibility) wise and bad which is what we appear to be.

You can have talent without experience and get a poor result. You can have talent without execution and get a poor result. Everything is just happening so slowly and ineffectively that we've done nothing to stress the defense. Even great players will look bad in that scenario.

Some good points about the increase in tickets.
Not really. That increase was about becoming a P5. Based on our budget, even after the increase, not having successful programs is what we deserve. Additionally, Whether Prohm was the best choice is a sunk cost.

Time to focus on how we get better. We need help in transfer recruiting. No matter how well you recruit high school guys, you have holes year-to-year in which you are leaving wins on the table if they go unfilled. We had so many holes this year and NONE got sufficiently filled.

It was never easier for an ISU coach to grab starter level newcomers than this past year....And we added Jeff Beverly and even had to keep a spot open. Pathetic

No, you’re confusing talent with potential. Big difference. We have the least amount of talent of any Cyclone team in 30 years, maybe longer. Potentially they’ll develop into being middle of the pack in terms of modern era Cyclone teams, but that’s at least a year away.

Yes, thanks to guys like Niang, Monte, Naz, Thomas.

Show me one set play we've run this year that resulted in a lay-up or easy bucket. Heck, we are struggling to even get the ball inbounded this year. Remember Fred's inbound plays? We used to get layups every other time!

I haven't watched the Bulls this year. They have good inbound plays?

That Malou high risk/high reward was a killer. Unfortunately the risk part kicked in. That tied up a scholly til what like May/June 2016, the transfer market was pretty picked over when a decision was made. If we have taken a sit out transfer earlier, he would have spent time in the program learning the system with some great players. And would be contributing this year I would think.

I get Malou had the potential to be a home run, but to your point you gotta fill the holes, and that left a big one.

Good on you for donating, ISU needs more like you.

On another note, I'm willing to take those donation bennies off your hands. Since they aren't being used :);)

This is true on so many levels. The last 3 springs weve seen threads on here about all these stud transfers visiting and which 4 of the top 5 we are getting. Then within days the top players are going to lesser programs and we end up with guys that cant even start on a mid major team. Thats all on Prohm.

If he was unable to secure any top transfer this year with the amount of playing time available I really dont see much hope for him in that regard.
