Kansas Started 4 Guard Lineup Last Night

Watched Kansas vs. Fort Hays State last night. Thought it was interesting that Kansas started a 4 guard lineup.

PG Vick
G Graham
G Mykhailiuk
G Newman
C Azubuike (7 ft.)

Cyclones should matchup very well with the Jayhawks. Kansas seems to lack depth (similar to ISU) and size this year and I believe the announcers said that they only have only 9 scholarship players eligible this season. A quick check of the box score shows that KU only has about 7 players in its rotation at this time.

Is this year that someone finally knocks KU off its Big 12 perch? Discuss.

They played 4Gs last year as well although Jackson and Svi both had size.

A lot of KU’s success probably depends on how Newman plays. If he’s the same player he was at MSU they may lose. If he plays close to his potential they’ll probably win it easily again.

I’m curious to see how the Graham/Svi/Vick group steps up with Mason and Jackson gone.

Yeah, they played small ball last year as well. They have 8 they play right now- the bench consists of Preston, Lightfoot and Garrett. They can't afford to lose Preston or Doke to injury. I think there will be times this year that both will be in foul trouble and they will be very small. But their guards and wings are good enough that it shouldn't matter. Especially since a couple of their wings taller. I watched their exhibitions and I really like the Garrett kid. He hustles, rebounds, plays defense, can pass. I think by conference time, KU will be starting Preston and Doke together. And all else being equal. KU will win the conference by 3 games.

Who takes the "last shot" for them? I hear a lot of buzz saying that Graham is gonna turn heads, but he doesn't strike me as the guy with that killer instinct that Mason had.

I think Graham is the man for them and he has proven a few times he can be the man. Remember the Buddy Hield matchup two years ago at OU? Graham carried that team to a win with 27 points and he played defense on Hield. I don't think he will have as great of year as Senior Mason though. He was crazy good last year.

I think Graham takes over for Frank at the end of games, he's a stud but that's a small dropoff, Frank was cold blooded last year. The big question mark is who leads the team in arrest now that Jackson and Bragg are gone? Vick's domestic violence history puts him in the drivers seat but Jackson was a rare talent.

Unless the FBI conflates the season into something other than hoops, Ku looks the part once more. But yes, injuries could sidetrack as well due to a lack of depth.

They displayed the same sense of entitlement and arrogance as ever last night v. Hays, America. And I don't see them losing it with Graham at the point. He understands and is good enough.
