John Rothstein put out 10 bold predicitons for the college basketball season and one of them doesn't sound very nice... https://www.fanragsports.com/10-bold-predictions-for-2017-18-college-basketball-season/

"Iowa State will finish last in the Big 12: Steve Prohm is one of the truly great guys in college basketball and has never won fewer than 21 games in his six years as a head coach. But he’s yet to be tested as he will be this season. Iowa State lost its top six scorers — Monte Morris, Matt Thomas, Naz Mitrou-Long, and Deonte Burton — from last year’s team that reached the NCAA Tournament. While the Cyclones have recruited well with freshmen like Lindell Wigginton and Terence Lewis, they’re still freshmen. Prohm has no returning double-figure scorers in a league that’s as unforgiving as any. Five of the Big 12’s head coaches — Bill Self, Bob Huggins, Lon Kruger, Shaka Smart, and Bruce Weber — have coached in a Final Four. Two others — Jamie Dixon and Scott Drew — have taken teams to the Elite Eight. This will be Iowa State’s toughest season since Fred Hoiberg’s first year as head coach in 2010-11."

Can't argue a lot with his logic. Still have to play the games. There are some great coaching in the Big 12. Bruce Weber isn't one of them. Still holding out hope that things will come together and Hilton with still have some magic. 7th place would be a very good season for the Clones.

I am not ready to throw Smart into the great coach category either.

I expect some pretty lofty highs and some dark, depressing lows during the season. Sounds like I better stock up on beer.....

Yeah, no kidding.

Bold would have been saying ISU will make the tourney. Not exactly a deep analysis.

Well, it is interesting and a change of pace to not hear how awful the Big 12 is (football) and have some acknowledgement of it's basketball depth. That is quite the coaching list.

I’m pretty sure Donovan Jackson was 5th on last year’s team in scoring... I would hope Rothstein could try and get his facts straight at least before hating on ISU.

No denying the loss of so much experience and productivity points to lower expectations. But why is it ISU (and Prohm) get no benefit of doubt with newcomers or that returning players might lift their productivity in more prominent roles?

I wouldn't expect anyone to put Iowa State into a category with "they don't rebuild, they reload" group (UK, KU, UNC, Duke, MSU etc., etc.). But consider this segement:

"While the Cyclones have recruited well with freshmen like Lindell Wigginton and Terence Lewis, they’re still freshmen."

Fair assessment. But if the situation were similar, but was in reference to Texas and Shaka Smart, do you think they'd be picked 10th?

I hope we finish better than that but understand why someone would pick us last. We have a lot of work to do.

To Everyone freaking out about the Exhibition game, yeah it isn't great to see them play the way they did. But we are missing 2 guys, one of which is for sure going to make a difference on the defensive and rebounding side of the ball, and it was their first time playing in Hilton (not an excuse but going to take some time to get going shooting in an arena compared to practice gyms).

But to the exhibition game leading to our season outlook, everyone should take a step back. I think in 2009 or 10, Syracuse lost to Le Moyne in the Carrier Dome, and everyone freaked out about how they weren't going to be up to their expectations. They went 30-5 (15-3 in conf.) and made it to the Sweet Sixteen. My point being, exhibition games are just that, and I think that we can take some good and some bad from it and Prohm will definitely emphasize the bad to the kids, but it isn't worth going into total freak out mode because of a score in the first week in November.

Also remember that Prohm's teams start off very slow...last year had a 2 point win over Indiana State, a 14 point Hawk loss, and losing to Drake with 6 minutes left in the Hy Vee classic. Team gelled as it started the Big 12 conference slate. Expect a similar trend this year...it might take even longer given the youth movement. I expect to see improvement as the season goes on...and some wins in conference play.

Unfortunately, he is not far off. I think 8th is probably our top end. Going to be a rough year.
