Where do we go at QB from here?

What would you do at QB?

It's simple. You play Park if he is ready. He is a more talented QB and he is going to be the starter next year barring an injury or another unforseen medical issue. It is always good to have a solid backup and we clearly have that. This QB carousel never works out for anyone, ask Jantz/Barnett/Richardson/Rohach/Lanning. Park is clearly a Big 12 QB and they cleared the way for him to be ISU's QB this year and next when they moved Lanning to MLB.

I would like to see more of Joel (5-10 offensive plays) a game, but understand if he doesnt (due to fatigue) get that when Park returns. Just need to set the offense up with Montgomery, that is key. It honestly might not even matter who the QB is as long as they run the O through Montgomery.

Comparing our OL to Snyder's is laughable

How many OL's do they have in the NFL? It's not like they are Wisconsin or Iowa. We'd have 2 starters for them. Plus they do a lot more pulling than we do. And the QB draws means the RB becomes a lead blocker. They get you out gunned from a personnel standpoint.

Lanning would have a lot more success playing QB for Snyder than he would here.

Yes, that is why I specially said that if we run the offense we ran the 1st 4 games when we were ranked 45th in the country in offensive efficiency, that Park gives us the best chance to go 6-6. Agreed.

Whoever we go with, we need to keep the same offensive gameplan. When Kempt was in there Manning and the coaches did a good job calling plays that never really put him in a position to fail.

Yeah, but Kempt was hitting his guys and not consistently overthrowing them or putting them in bad spots.

We don't have the personnel to run Bill Snyder's offense which is why we don't...

At first it was scary watching Kempt throw the ball. He has so much less velocity on the ball than Park. I was concerned he was going to get picked, but he did an awesome job making the throws he can make. He did an awesome job making the right reads and getting the ball to our play makers. Can't ask for more than that.

If that gave us the best chance to win we'd run that offense.

Well Snyders won 9+ games in 14 of his last 22 seasons. How have McFarland, Herman, Messingham, and Mangino fared pushing it downfield with 1 dimensional pocket passers in Ames?

So if we run the offense Campbell wants to run, we play Park, is what you're saying?

Ive thought for awhile that the clones needed to pull the offense in a bit. We have a ton of capability. But we dont have to be like Baylor was. A little slower, take a little more time, and make the little plays that add up. I think the staff was forced to do this a bit with Kempt. It is a fact that Park has a higher personal ceiling. But passing for 300 yards and 3 tds, while throwing 2 interceptions and losing the game doesnt really benefit anyone but the guy who wants his name in the record books.

I read the first 5 pages. I read many posts talking about our "walk-on" QB. He was a scholarship QB at Oregon State. Then transferred to a JC that had an established returning QB. Is it hard to learn a new offense and displace an established starter in 1 season? Now he came to ISU with 2 years to play without a scholarship. The coaches obviously believed he had the talent to play or you don't give up a walk-on spot to a 2 year guy when you could get a 4-5 year guy that might develop. The coaches saw something. He has worked and learned for 1+ years at ISU and showed that he is capable.

He is not the best QB in the country, and probably not even on the roster, but he did manage and perform the things he was asked to do. I am not sure how long before the game the coaches knew Park was going to be gone. Perhaps the game was simplified for Kempt because there was not a full week to prepare. I think all summer I heard CMC state that we need to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers. Kempt did that and did enough of his own running to win the game.

I also noted that the description on Park is 'personal health issues" and not injury. Not sure what that means, but it does sound different than other players. I hope it is something that is quickly resolved and that he returns. I would definitely hope the coaches do not play him before either he is near 100% healthy or worse case scenario is that Kempt becomes in-effective and Park has to be brought back before fully healed.

I am not sure what is going on with Nolan. At the Akron game, Kempt played a few snaps, and I heard that because he was from Ohio, the coaches wanted to play him. But I thought I also heard something after the game about Nolan not being healthy as well. Is there anything to this that anyone is aware of?

I'm pretty sure you can have as many walk-ons as you want. Only so many are allowed to dress for games.

I guess that is what we do right now if that is the offense Campbell wants to run while we have Montgomery & Lazard. I'm still trying to understand his long term vision, but I am very excited that we have commits from dual threats like Devon & Re-al, which would differ from what he did at Toledo with Ely and Woodside. Of course, according to CyTwins, we shouldn't be taking guys like Devon and Re-al. We need some Nathan Stanleys to sit in the pocket and sling like Park when we no longer have Montgomery & Lazard around.

This is my thinking. Kempt played a virtually perfect game in very difficult circumstances. Keep giving him the ball.

I haven't really paid attention to much in this thread so maybe I've missed what you've been saying the whole time but I'm not sure how you're saying we shouldn't take players like Moore or Mitchell when Campbell obviously wants them here.

Park was throwing at a 66% clip before the Texas game. He played bad but I attribute a lot of that to bad coaching/scheme. Put Kempt in for Park with that game plan and we lose by 30.

Kempt played great for what was asked of him, which was very little. You’re trying to tell me that Park or Noland couldn’t throw those screen balls to Ryan or Murdock?? There’s a reason why Lazard didn’t have a catch until after halftime.

The gameplan yesterday was beautiful on offense, but that isn’t going to work for very long. I’d like to see how many of his Yards were passes in front of the line of scrimmage. I’d imagine a good chunk were Lazard’s TD and Butler before the half.

If and when Park is healthy and stable, he has to be the guy. Keep the same game plan, but Park allows you to open up the offense

You do realize Texas only scored 17 points while holding the ball for 40 minutes right? Kempt wouldn't have gifted Texas two more touchdowns automatically.
