Ratings for last night's game were down 13% from last season (which were down 9% from the previous year). Not good for the NFL. But college football ratings continue to increase.

The upcoming hurricane definitely did not help but I think politics and the anthem protests are turning people off to some extent. Last year the NFL blamed the election for lower ratings. It will be interesting to follow this year's ratings.

I just don't understand why someone wouldn't watch because of the national anthem stuff. I've never tuned into a game to hear the anthem, so I don't get why someone sitting down during it would make someone not want to watch. If you're that person, please explain..

I agree. The only thing I can think of is that people use sports for entertainment to get away from politics. But the counter to that is that its not like the announcers are talking politics during the games. I'd be curious also to hear from someone who says they watch less football because of that.

But there is definitely SOMETHING here - the NFL has been king for decades. And then all of a sudden ratings are dropping substantially, there has to be reasons for that.

Yeah, I saw that this morning. I dunno. NFL is still undoubtedly king, but it's got to be an alarming trend for the league office. At some point they can't keep explaining the ratings drop away because of an election or antural disaster or whatever. There's always going to be competing programming.

I don't have any evidence to back it up, but I suspect it's at least in part because of the CTE and head trauma stuff. It's a little bit more difficult to watch the game when you know what the likely impact of all that helmet to helmet contact is going to be, and as a result some people just don't watch anymore.

I also think it's cte and brain damage research. For me hearing that some players were retiring early made it more real.

Like someone else mentioned, recent and ongoing storm events in large market areas are probably playing a role. Additionally, you have a game with New England who many are getting sick of (count me in, didn't start watching until KC came back) and Kansas City, a pretty small market/interest team. I think later season games will be drawing viewing numbers much closer to what we've seen in recent years.

NFL is just becoming less popular. I think it's going to drop a lot in the next 10 years. I think the 2 main things are the cte stuff and rule changes to make game safer.

I didn't even know there was a game until I heard the score this morning.

I heard talk about this on the radio this morning. Yes, ratings have been down last year and again for last night - but if you look at the overall ratings from the last television season, the Sunday night and Thursday night NFL games still had the highest ratings of any programming. So while the number for Pats-Chiefs is lower than the opener last year, in comparison to all the other television there is, the NFL is still right up there on top.

There are just more and more TV options available out there. You can't get the massive number of eyeballs to one specific program, not like you were able to 5, 10, 20 years ago. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just different.

(I do agree the CTE/health issues are probably having some effect on viewing habits; I don't really think there's a significant number of football fans who are saying, "I'm never watching the NFL again as long as players are protesting 'Merica!" There's got to be a few, I'm not convinced it's a measurable amount.)

i don't think people really care about this. it's overhyped by the media and people who want to turn it into something more political than it is. a guys sits for the anthem... okay... so let's play the game. the people making a fuss over it are the ones blaming the politics of it.

america has shown time and time and time again to forget quickly as long as something is entertaining.

my best guess as to why ratings are turning (from excellent to slightly-less-excellent) is the nature of the game. it's slow. really slow. short bursts of actions are great but unless you're a dedicated fan it's better background noise than anything else.

think of ISU games - how many times are the players standing around waiting for the guy in orange to spin his arm so we can get back to playing?

Well, all the people who missed the first part of the game because they didn't even know it was on didn't miss much. Unless you are a die-hard Patriots fan, the entire pre-game and most of the first quarter were pretty insufferable. Non-stop pro-Patriots garbage. They won the Super Bowl last year in an unbelievable comeback..I get it. Let's move on. Sheesh.

Yes, I'm a Chiefs fan.

But there is definitely SOMETHING here - the NFL has been king for decades. And then all of a sudden ratings are dropping substantially, there has to be reasons for that.

-- a conservative fan base who finds the anthem protests fundamentally disrespectful to the veterans and first-responders that, to them, it honors

-- economic and demographic decline of the "white working class" that formed the backbone of the NFL's fan base in the past (more so with NASCAR)

-- a relatively bland and monotonous style of play compared to college games, which feature far more diversity in schemes, particularly on offense

--- a much higher level of violence than the college game, too... amazing how much faster the game is, and how much bigger the hits, in the NFL

-- fatigue... it is hard to try to maintain that same level of intensity in the fall when football content is so omnipresent throughout the year now, which was not the case before

-- a shift towards experiencing football as fantasy instead of football as a game, which really reduces your incentive towards giving away those 3.5 hours

-- longer-and-longer games, more-and-more advertisements, shorter-and-shorter attention spans, and more competition for eyeballs, particularly from something like basketball, which gives more constant action, shorter games, and appeals to a cosmopolitan crowd

Just off the top of my head. My interest in the NFL is way lower now than 5-10 years ago, even as my interest in college sports and the NBA has increased greatly.

I agree with this and want to see what kind of ratings NBC gets on Sunday night with Giants-Cowboys before wondering if this is real. Especially if you can take out the state of Florida from both these ratings and whatever you compare it to (as they will be a little preoccupied this weekend).

I don't disagree with you but we've had all of these options for more than 2 years. Ratings were very high in 2015 and 2015 - and then all of a sudden, they are down 10% for the entire 2016 season. There has to be reasons for that kind of sudden drop off. I think people are right on with the reasons - there isn't just one reason but multiple that are piling up for the NFL.

College football ratings are up and continue to go up. And those games are usually 4+ hours. With the NFL's new rules and a few less commercials - games were done in less than 3 yesterday.
