Here's a contrarian idea that may be what we need: Miss the world cup this cycle and see what happens. Maybe that's what we need to do something about our inability on the world stage.

I thought we had turned the corner in 2002 when we beat Portugal in group, Mexico in the knockouts and were denied a handling call in the area against Germany in the quarters. Nothing has changed and argualby we've gone downhill.

How crazy is that?

Based on ESPNs SPI numbers, the US currently has a 76% likelihood of qualifying for the WC. A win today improves those odds to 91%, a draw keeps the odds unchanged basically, and a loss would bump us down to a 56% chance of qualifying.

So a loss doesn't end things, but it would definitely make those last two qualifiers nail biters.

I'm not sure how they are going to list this formation. I defaulted to 4-4-2 but this could easily play more like a 4-2-3-1 with Dempsey dropping into the MF with Pulisic and Nagbe and Bradley and Acosta supporting behind.
