Since you have such great sources in Iowa City, why don't you ask them how Fant has looked in camp?

He'll be one of the top 5 no doubt. Right up there with Justice Hill, Justin Crawford, Kyle Hicks, Terrence Williams. I'm sure Texas and Oklahoma will have a guy that ends up being one of the best in the Big 12 that nobody knows about yet.Related: Petersen called Wadley the best running back ISU plays this year. He's probably right, considering almost all of the Big 12's top rushers left. But I think Wadley and TCU's Kyle Hicks are basically the same player. Wadley faster, Hicks a better receiver, who lines up in the slot a lot.

Not a ton of trouble replacing Johnson.
I would guess the starters for the first snap against Wyoming will be either Matt Nelson or Parker Hesse at one end, Anthony Nelson at the other end, Nathan Bazata and one DT and Cedric Lattimore at the other. The two Nelsons and Hesse split the defensive end reps 3 ways last year, all played 300+ snaps. Bazata will be a 3-year starter at DT. Lattimore played about 90 snaps last year as a true freshmen. Beyond those 5 guys, A.J. Epenesa will definitely play. Epenesa is the 5-star son of former Hawkeye player. He is the type of physical specimen as a freshmen that Iowa and Iowa State just don't usually get. How good will he be in Game 2 of the season? No idea.
So Iowa has 3 starters back and question mark in replacing Jaleel Johnson. In the Kids' Day practice, both Matt Nelson and Hesse were taking snaps at DT, especially in passing situations. The overall feeling in Hawkeye fandom is some worry about the DT spot, but most teams would like to be in the position of having 3 of 4 d-line starters back and all 3 linebackers returning.
Bigger question marks for Iowa are secondary and the passing game (just my opinion of course).
Not a ton of trouble replacing Johnson. Will he be misssed? yeah he will but they have Lattimore and Bazata along with the Nelsons that will be in the middle. Nelsons, Hesse and Epenesa will be on he outside. DL will be a huge strength for Iowa this year. I think they will be better as they have 3 year starting LBS behind them and athletic young secondary players.
The Iowa defense is going to be very good this year. They lost 1 starter and gained a 4* recruit to take his place in Lattimore and now have a 5* DE in Epenesa to rotate guys along the line more.
Lol is this serious? All I heard last year was about how dominant he was.
He was dominant. But Lattimore is in the same mold. Will there be a drop off in production? As a whole unit, which was the question, I do not really think so. We lost a 3rd round pick but gained a top 25 recruit in the country to replace him along with a lot of guys with experience too. Now will Lattimore be Johnson? He could be but not at this point in his career. He is lucky he has 3 other guys that have started playing with him.
Now if you are being serious would you rather have a lattimore type recruit and player taking over or say a back up QB that got beat out starting on defense for the first time in his career..... perspective man perspective
ISU will grow this year. By the time the DL gels at the end of the year we'd a 7 point neutral favorite against those guys out east. Iowa is holding onto their superiority as tightly as they can, and 50 runs this September will be the only way they can keep it going for one more year.
Lattimore was definitely not a 4* recruit

A Lattimore type recruit? ISU brought in 3 JUCO DL that either had a similar or higher composite ranking than Lattimore.
Also Epenesa wasn't a top 25 recruit.
Yeah I have not a clue where I got that from then. My bad! I thought he was a 4* guy. Maybe he was at one time but he most definitely was a lowly 3* at the end of the rankings. Even ESPN he was a 3*. I would include scout but I think you said they dont matter because they are scout so that doesnt count right? I am tryin to play by CyTwin rules. Hard to keep up here!
Again he was at one time, so top 50 then. is that good enough for you? I dont have time for all of the technical stuff today ha!
That's funny that we recruit guys that move up in the rankings after they commit and you recruit guys that trend the other direction. Lattimore, Epenesa, this Johnson kid plus it's even worse in basketball recruiting for you guys. Guess our staff is better at identifying the under the radar kids.
If they were better then the results would show on the field... until then I am not seeing the under the radar claim.
It also should be considered that ISU also loses a lot of the higher ranked guys to better programs when their start to get ranked better, much like Iowa does too to an extent.
Thank you! I am a person that feels a guy like Johnson makes everyone around him better. There is a reason there was no drop off when Ott went down.I would guess the starters for the first snap against Wyoming will be either Matt Nelson or Parker Hesse at one end, Anthony Nelson at the other end, Nathan Bazata and one DT and Cedric Lattimore at the other. Should be interesting to see how that unit plays the first game
Well then it must be true.
Or maybe he is seeing htem go against an OL that is pathetic at pass pro![]()
It is more than a bowl game. iowa fans used to use the "we get better as the season goes on" excuse when they would lose to iSu. But that never really made sense because they would lose to Purdue, NW, Indian or Minnesota later in the season.I realize ISU got better, I was mocking Clone fans who say Iowa doesn't get better during the year just because they lose A Bowl game a month after the regular season.
