Iowa Football Recruiting

Yeah that's the part I don't get. Hawkeye fans will say "well Chizik and Rhoads were considered saviors too" but then will admit that Campbell is different than those two.

I'd say initially both were regarded as that. Chizik I think fell out of favor quickly. Rhoads was the hometown guy riding in to turn things around. I liked Coach Rhoads. I think he would be great to play for. The Mangino thing I think accelerated the downfall. There was a game I went to a couple years ago when ISU played TCU and it was close at the half. Then the wheels came off and if I remember correctly ( I may not be), they hardly threw to Lazard in the second half even when in single coverage. I'd have told Lanning any time Lazard was one on one go right to him. Just throw up for grabs and have him get it. But hey Iowa's offense has provided a lot of WTF moments in the GD time also.

Way too early to tell what Campbell will do. Looks and sounds good so far.

Anytime Lazard has one on one coverage you need to throw it to him IMO. He's that good.

IMO CPR dug his own grave when he promoted Mesingham to OC. The Mangino hire was complete desperation.

That game was one where both Richardson and Lanning played at QB. I think Richardson actually played the most. Still with a 6'5" receiver against their smaller D Backs just go to him.

It wasn't deemed a desperate move at the time. It was a complete steal and was almost universally loved even by Mr. Cyclone himself

I love this hire! Love it!

I am surprised though. Was told very early on that he was not interested but hey, I love this curve ball. Presser at 4:30. We will have full coverage.

I'm not saying that Cyclone fans weren't excited about the Mangino hire because most if us were but to say that it wasn't a desperation hire by CPR isn't inaccurate. Even though a lot of us were excited, there was also a lot of concern on how this was going to work as far as clashing ego's go. I know several Iowa State fans that were concerned and it all played out just like they were hoping it wouldn't.

I think the lesson is don't hire dicks to be your coaches. Mangino was a great football mind, but a miserable person. Rhoads was out of his mind hiring him, and I was shocked Clone fans didn't universally come out against that hire at the time it was made.

I'm sure if Iowa had a kicker or punter bringing down their average you'd be taking a different stance on it but such is life.

Iowa had a scholarship punter in this year's incoming class and I haven't heard a single person attempt to exclude his rating from the team rating. Nice try.

Yeah, I completely agree. As I already mentioned, the majority of our fan base was excited about the hire mostly but a lot of that had to do with the fact that Mesingham was a god awful OC and CPR absolutely settled when they promoted him. Their were definite concerns when he was hired and those were basically the things you pointed out. The hire was a hail Mary.
