One season, 3rd recruiting class - kinda weird

No more than an odd thought running through my petrified pea brain today some minutes after the Carson Schleker commitment.

We've only got one season of the CMC iSu era in the books, yet we're neck deep already into the third recruiting season with our new staff. And what a whale of a job they're doing.

It seems the 2018 class, even though smaller than the staff's first two, can take a step up with just a couple or three more commitments.

Offensively, how about OT Joey Ramos to round out the OL recruiting? Only one more WR to go, and he's got to be a big one (over 6 foot) but we're in great shape with several.

Defensively, grab one more outstanding LB? One more excellent interior DL prospect along with a top notch DE?

That's 16 commits. With those kids we're 80 percent to the finish line with this class. The trend is upward bound.

JP better be sitting down with Campbell today and letting him know he wants to build a winner here. It's nice to see your employees go off and do bigger/better things when they're ready but I want Campbell to retire here. I want our field named Campbell Field at Jack Trice Stadium. I want a statue of him in front of the SEZ. And most importantly I want Campbell to want to be here. I want him to now money is no issue. Resources are no issue. Facilities are no issue. Whatever he needs at ISU he will get because he is the future and we'll grow together.

Get off the fence. Do you like him or not?

JP has had a history of slow playing head coaches but I don't expect that to be the case with CMC. This isn't ten years ago, ISU has the money to invest towards a coach and I fully expect JP to do that. CMC seems like a pretty down to earth guy and if he is taken care of I think keeping him won't be as big of an issue as what many other think. IMO taking care of the assistant coaches needs to be a priority as well. I don't think you can overstate how important staff continuity is and the last thing you need is to see coordinators/position coaches making lateral moves because of a little more money.

We will see how JP handles it. I think we are bowling this year and a raise may be in order. After 2018 we will know far more about CMC's situation. JP better do what is necessary though. I don't want him being stingey just because he thinks he can stretch a few more dollars out.

I don't believe JP is a stupid man. On the contrary. . . .

If Campbell is successful here, I don't think he is going to jump for just the next big check that is offered to him. He probably has a pretty short list of schools that he would go to (tOSU or better).

I think we are kidding ourselves if we can match the money and prestige of a small number of programs. No way that Campbell is turning down...

-- Michigan
-- Notre Dame
-- Ohio State
-- probably the upper-level SEC and Texas schools, too

...if they call. I think he knows he has a platform to launch into that.

I hope we have the success where that becomes a problem.

CMC was signed to a 5 year deal, right? While its been great to see that recruiting has been better with this staff its still too early to talk about extensions. Lets at least see where things are at the end of this upcoming season. Some of the posters sound like people who were in full support of CPR getting a 10 year extension but complained about how expensive the buyout was 3 years later. While I don't want ISU to be a stepping stone job, but extensions shouldn't be talked about until at least half way through current contracts. I'd waive that line of thinking for a long time established coach, like Izzo or Coach K, Coach Cal, or Saban.

Also, with what CMC has said about ISU, what it has to offer, and what he is about as a person/coach, CMC won't be leaving Ames quickly and it won't be for a mid-level Power 5 school. When CMC leaves, it will be for a top tier conference school. Schools that are usually in the Top 4 in their conference.

This is completely understated. What makes him good is his ability to surround himself with really great guys who get it and bust there ass. To me, it's just as important for Jamie sell to CMC as his top tier staff guys.

I like Campbell as much as the next guy, but he won 3 games last year. 3!!!

I hope he's so successful that we have to worry about him being poached. Agree that the future looks bright, but I'm gonna pump the brakes a bit . . .

If he does something like wins 3 again this season threads like this will be fun to fall back on, or if they come out the first two games like last season...those were incredibly bad performances even for a new coach and by ISU standards.

I'm repeating but liked glimpses of what I saw last year but the final score/record matters the most. This site will be interesting either way by late September.

He really needs to shake that "ISU loses close games" rust off.

Once he does that, it will be a different program.

What were you expecting? With the amount of attrition that team had last year I thought 3 was about right.

From my seat, the team in August was a shell of what it was in November. What we saw last season hasn't been seen in Ames since...? People are excited because of the potential this staff has.
