Ultrasounds were only used when there was concern when I was having my boys.
I had to go 90 miles with a full bladder in the fourth month for an ultrasound for the first because they thought I might be having twins (I kind of exploded outward between 3 & 4 months) but nope...just one, growing fast.
When I did the same thing in my second pregnancy and they suggested another trip to Spokane, I passed.
A friend had one done around the same time, and the technician told her she was having a boy, then jokingly added "or a deformed girl". She worried for the rest of her pregnancy, and when she gave birth and the OB said it was a girl, her husband says she got absolutely hysterical in the delivery room. The OB thought there was some normal hormonal swelling that the tech interpreted as a penis...no deformity.
The technology has improved vastly since then, but it still amazed me when my daughters & DIL's were getting them practically every six weeks...

In most cases there isn't a necessity.
For our games it hasn't been an issue. I didn't even see the lightning that caused the game before ours to be called early, however the Assistant Referee (AR) on the near side did. Coaches can also notify referees that they see lightning. In all of the games that we have had called in the last few years (since we have had more than a center ref) that have been called after play started have been because the AR notified the Center that they saw lightning or the bench did. Generally they are receptive to it if both benches agree that there was or likely was lightning so someone holding a one goal lead or a tenuous draw can't game the system and imagine lightning to preserve a win/avoid a loss by getting the game called early.
The problem is that when multiple games are going on there is no communication between ref of one game and another. The previous time our game was called early a week or so ago our game was called early because lightning was observed by the AR on our pitch. However, the other three games right next to ours continued because there was no communication between the fields. As soon as one sees it they should be interacting with referees on other fields.
Two of the potential varsity pitchers are 8th graders (because we are extremely short on pitchers) so she knows them, another she caught for when she was in 6th grade and this girl was in 8th, and the last HS pitcher is excited to have her catch for her. They have also had off season pitching/catching this year.
U/S--only had the 20wk anatomy scan with the 14yr old. Around our last OB appt the Dr. estimated her weight by feeling my belly and she was almost right on with her estimate. With our 2nd we only had the 20wk anatomy scan. Re-reading the scan results, she was sitting frank breech at that time and it was noted "abdomen hard to see". Little did we know she had a major abdominal defect that potentially could have been caught if she was in a different position or if we would have had a 2nd scan later. It would have changed where she was delivered. Rather than in a small local hospital with no OB (delivered by a family Dr), no neonatologist, no pediatric surgeon, no respirstory therapists, no NICU nurses etc she would have been born where there were all those specialists in the room as well as specialized equipment. But everything turned out okay so we don't dwell on the "what ifs". Third had the usual 20wk scan, then at the end I was low on amniotic fluid so I had multiple U/S the last few weeks. Eventually she was too low on fluid and had to be induced. Fourth we only did the 20wk scan I think.
^yep, even after the miscarriage, just had ultrasounds at 20 weeks with the rest of the babies.
My sister (yes, she has a lot of bad things happen to/around her) lost a full term baby because the cord was around his neck. She went in for her visit the week he was due and no heartbeat. I often wonder these people that get ultrasounds all of the time, if that would have been caught in time to save him. How often do mothers get them now? He was an absolutely perfect eight pound baby boy. I guess even with your youngest Birdy, you just had the one too.

That's probably a part of why they do them so frequently now...just in case. It's probably a protection for the doctors as well; OB/Gyn just barely edges out surgeons as the medical specialty that encounters the most malpractice suits.
According to MrsWx she doesn't think there is another scheduled normal ultrasound. Maybe one closer to the end to double check everything. She chose our Dr. because he has very high reviews (the one time I have seen him he was great) and because he does OB as well as family practice. Might be the only one left in the city that does.
Had an OB/Gyn with the first, in a three-way partnership. They rotated us between the three so you never really developed a bond with any of them. Second time I went with my GP, and all went well. It's not real common any more for a GP to deliver babies, so your description of your doc surprised me.
True. She did have the normal check the week before and there was no problem. She also was still feeling kicks two days before. She was in her 40's at the time and I think they were pretty diligent with her.
We had additional higher res ultrasounds with my youngest because there were a few markers for Downs in the amniocentesis. Luckily it wasn't but I have a feeling they were detecting one of his other problems.
I had the same OB/Gyn every time, but they just had us see the other doctors in the last couple of months when you are going in more often anyway. My actual doctor was only the one on call twice, had one of his partners twice, and the other one once. My doctor was in on the elevator delivery so he didn't do much on that one.
MrsWx likes him and that is what is important. I need to get a physical done since I haven't had one in a few years and will ask him if he will do my new flight physical next year (yay congress actually did something that will help me!). If he will do it then I will stay if not I will find someone who will and go to them.
