China is on my bucket list for a variety of reasons. Any must-see recommendations? I don't mind the touristy things if they are worth seeing.
I was in the middle of editing my post earlier to add one more thing but my internet was being super crappy. The night market in Beijing is worth checking out. It's like the Chinese version of the Iowa State Fair except it's a bunch of packed, narrow alleyways with shops and food vendors. They have seahorses, scorpions, cochroaches, snakes, you name it on a stick. A guy in my group ate three live scorpions off of a stick. They typically fry them first but he wanted them alive.

I seem to be missing mine.

I think this guy took it.

Were you travelling with Bear Grylls? I may leave out "live scorpions on a stick" whilst trying to sell this trip idea to my wife.

I'm still a few years away because I want my daughter to be older, but I've been doing some initial digging around. We are looking at staying mostly in southern China as we are likely to do a little research into my wife's family tree while we are there (Ji'an in the Jiangxi province). I'm torn as that would likely take Beijing out of the equation, depending on the amount of time we are there.

Last question: Did you know any of the language, did you have someone with you that was bilingual, or was it fairly easy to navigate around with English? I've heard from several people tell me that many people are fluent in English and actually enjoy the opportunity to practice.

I only knew a few words in Chinese before going. We had three students who were from China and they certainly helped when it came to ordering food and things like that. I ran into very few Chinese people that could speak fluent English. Some spoke none at all which made it difficult to communicate. Lots of pointing at things and using gestures. I was surprised by the lack of English speakers there. We also had a tour guide in each city and a bus that took the group everywhere during the day which made it easier to get around. At night we were on our own. I wouldn't worry too much about it because you'll be able to get by I think.

My next door neighbor went to China a couple of years ago. He ate pigeon and donkey while he was there.

My son went to China when an undergrad with a college group he was in. He is still a super picky eater but tried the seahorses just to say he did. I was shocked when he called from China but some friend of his was somehow managing this through some computer back at school and it all sounded a bit shady to me.

Something I forgot is that I'm interning at REG in Ames over the summer.

What's new with you guys?

Nice, I have a high school classmate that works there and I did a phone interview with them a couple of years ago. Didn't work out, unfortunately.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled, finally graduated with my Master's, and will be starting a new job on the 22nd.
