U of I loses $1.4 million in lawsuit

My mom was an employee of Iowa State and experienced age discrimination. My perspective is "it happens everywhere" and believe this is a just verdict.
For the record, my comment was geared toward the actions of Barta & the U of I administration (including HC Ferrentz, Lil F, & so on) in a sarcastic way (needed a jimlad).

I am in agreement on the verdict from the information I gleaned from sources.

Juries are dumb and easily manipulated. The justice system is just as screwed up as the rest of America. And no I'm not talking about this case in particular because all I've paid attention to are what people are talking about on the radio.

I love that the lawyer says she's $1.4 million dollars richer while we know that is bunk as they will take a good 30-50% chunk I imagine and then the government may take another good chunk.

No, the jury system was handed down by our Founding Fathers and is part of Bill of Rights in 7th amendment.

I think everyone in the courtroom except Leistakow and Barta knew this would be the outcome. Iowa going to waste more of our money on investigating their hiring practices as opposed to dealing with the good old boys. Maybe they should investigate how they hired their President instead though.

It's certainly part of it. According to her lawyers, they felt another reason for the decision was how the day after she gave him a list of complaints, he reassigned her to what amounted to a do-nothing job.
The jury found in favor of Meyer on all five of her claims:

gender discrimination
sexual orientation discrimination
retaliation
equal pay violation
whistleblower violation

For them to do that, it's more than lack of documentation. It's willful intent.

The jury specifically found willful intent, which is why the judge can triple the lost wages.

Lol, brainwashed by insurance companies. Umm not even close. I've seen plenty of activists go to a jury trial with all the evidence / constitution or whatever on their side and they still convict without hardly a hesitation. It's the design of the system from a judge sitting in a dress and making up any lies they want to tell the jury and starts with hand picked juries to begin. They tend to default to the "authority" figure and rarely think for themselves.

The retaliation and whistleblower claims I get.

The others not so much. When you have long time lesbian athletic department employees past and present say they never had a problem with Barta and that they and their significant others were "treated like family" that's where I have to scratch my head.

That said Barta is an idiot and Iowa would be smart to replace him.

So, I'm just catching up with this after this weekend. The latest hoopla amongs hawk fans is that since the jury foreman is an ISU fan, the verdict should be tossed out on appeal. Good stuff. Apparently it's just impossible that a jury could have found for Meyer without there being something nefarious going on.

I guess it just goes to show that any fanbase has the ability to "Go Penn State/Baylor" when it comes to denial and delusion, if it's their favorite team with its feet to the fire.

Seriously?

Um no.

If Hawk fans had their way Barta would have been gone years ago. There isn't Hardly any support for that incompetent buffoon.

It would really suck to have an incompetent AD as a fan

It does. He should have been fired years ago anyway. Way too political at Iowa, he was always just a fund raiser/glad handler, has no clue how to run an athletic department. There was a reason things improved when Taylor got to Iowa City. They need to fire Barta now and get someone who can clean up his ****ing mess.

I hope the firing of the field hockey coach goes to trial and doesn't settle out. It will be fun to hear them compare how mean she was to her players compared to the shenanigans of the male coaches.

Just read the ESPN article on the gal at Arizona and her coach. The stuff that happens anymore is just unreal.
