Article on Point Guards to NBA Monte #6

That's awesome. It's always nice to see guys rewarded for coming for their senior year, especially when it's our own guy. I think this year has gone about as well as it could have for Monte. He was likely never going to jump these "high ceiling" guys like Ball, Fultz, Fox or Smith, but a solid senior year has put him the best of the non one-and-dones.

I hope Blum can weigh in on this topic. I don't understand why 5 freshman point guards are considered better draft picks than Monte. Monte's stats have only improved over the course of four years, under two different coaches, and arguably less overall talent around him.

For some of these point guards they have quality talent surrounding them, so that makes them look better than might actually be. Take Melo Trimble for example. He had his best stats his freshman year and they have only gone downward. As a GM you have a better understanding of what you are getting with Monte than these other point guards. Why risk it.

Same reason Kane didn't get drafted. The NBA values youth and ceiling SO MUCH. Monte's ceiling is lower than those five. He's likely more NBA ready and will be more consistent, but teams drafting in the lottery are looking for their next all-star.

I completely agree with what you're saying, especially regarding the ceiling. The NBA is going to say that Monte' is already what he's going to be. I know it has more to do with ceiling than age but I do wonder if the fact that he's young for a 4 year college player (won't turn 22 until after the draft) will help him at all. Some of these one and dones are coming out at 20 or 21 by the time they get done with prep schools etc.

More than anything he deserves to be drafted by a quality club, not a dumpster fire that contractually we keep him limited in progressing in the league. Aka Chicago, etc.

Please, I'm not asking this to get into an argumentative thread, cuz I love Monte to death and appreciate his career immensely. But was anyone else just a tad surprised to see Mason ranked below Monte? I only say that because Mason is many people's favorite to win Player of the Year and Cousy Award. Fine by me. I was just surprised, that's all. Best of luck to Monte. Hope he can make a roster somewhere.

Mason's main strength is his strength. I don't think that will get him far in the NBA.

No. Mason is too short for the NBA.

why is baseball so much different than basketball? in baseball they value years of stats, years of increasing competition, and reward guys with long contracts based on that data. why does basketballl want youth over everything?

Not an expert, but in baseball, they draft everyone young. Then, they develop them in house. For some reason, they also pay players what they were worth 5 years ago for the next 10 years. It's odd, but that's the market.

When are the Pacers projected to pick? Because that would be fun.
I haven't been impressed with how they have handled Georges. Plus it is a real possibility that their coach is fired. I'd prefer somewhere that values the long term.

Also I got mixed signals from what they were trying to do on this list. Is it a ranking of where they will go or who is the best option to stick in a lineup today. The list reads like a ranking of where they will be drafted, but the intro says it is about where they are today.

Ball, Fultz, Smith are 19 years old and are already putting up better stats than Monte... Imagine what they'll be going when they're 22

What have the Pacers been doing with Georges recently? I get updates for Pacers final scores so I can check if Georges has done anything and lately he hasn't been listed on the 13 man game roster. I assumed he was on assignment with the D league affiliate but I just looked and he hasn't been playing in those games either. Is he hurt or something? Why isn't he getting minutes somewhere?
